I've just put together my newly built rig (first time build and it survived having power supplied to it yayay)

So I need to install some operating system better than the windows 98 which is all I have, and figured why not try hooking up the new windows 7.

I'm trying to do this without a burned iso/dvd and using image mounting software instead. Trying to throw in my current system's HD into the new one to load the windows files.

Well I went ahead and downloaded the 3Gb ISO file which is half my HD,(It took 3 weeks to download) and went to mount it first with magicdisc (Failed to mount) then with PowerISO, it mounted but when trying to run the setup it then said 'file expects newer version of windows'

Is this game over or can I win?

Aren't people installing windows 7 on fresh/blank systems??

No it's not. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx

The beta is legally free from Microsoft.

Anyway, you can't upgrade Windows 98 to Windows 7... you need Vista SP1 to do the upgrade, otherwise you have a to do a brand new install.

Windows 7 is free to use until August of this year.

I run it primary right now, pretty decent, fast, but has a few annoying bugs and can have some slowdowns.

Although they have fixed the bug I've been having with vista. I think it's due to having more than 4Gb ram, whenever opening a picture in Windows Photo Viewer I always always had the "You do not have enough memory to view this photo" Message, when in fact I had around 4GB of free ram.

It says ''The Windows 7 Beta will stop working on August 1, 2009' on the site - hoping to find an XP disc sometime before then haha

Thanks for clearing up that I cannot upgrade, although I'm trying to do a fresh install on a new computer - but doing it by (somehow) loading the ISO from my current HD.

Im out of tylenol for today but I'll ask if I can:

Throw in my old win98 HD and start new computer using win98'

Copy the ISO + mounting software to new computer's HD

Remove the (old) win98 HD, then boot by running the mounting software in DOS, and starting windows 7 setup

C'huck_fu I 'wont give you a suggestion but over the last coulpe days of reading I've seen people complaining about games not working with windows 7

Why don't you completely remove the 98 HD, install the new HD, and boot from Windows 7 and install it on the new HD?

Software incompatibility is to be expected, which is why I currently continue to run Vista as my primary OS. 7 will find all the drivers for all your relatively recent hardware though. If you're running old school hardware, you may run into problems...

lol... this is funny because you took such an authoritative stance

Umm.. you guys are missing the point here.

He needs to reformat and change his file system to NTFS. Windows 98 does use FAT32 because DOS needs to read it.

Because i dont have a cd burner

Download this virtual drive software. Install it and mount the Windows 7 ISO in a virtual drive. In Vista, you can complete the Windows 7 installation within the OS. I did it myself. Not sure if it will work within Windows 98, but you can try it out.
