Windows Startup Hanging

Hi all,

I've been having issues that began immediately following a reset to defaults after an overclock, I believe.

What happens is this:
  1. I start the computer.
  2. Log in.
  3. No start-up programs seem to load, Skype, Steam, etc...
  4. If I right click on the desktop, the context menu shows semi-transparent and clicking on something does nothing.
  5. If I click on the Start button, it is semi-functional, but most programs won't open.
  6. If I click on shortcuts in the taskbar, most programs won't open, the few that do are essentially unresponsive.
  7. If I click on Google Chrome, suddenly Windows acts as if I just started the computer and everything loads up like normal.

I attempted to uninstall Chrome and boot again, but nothing would work at all. Reinstalled Chrome and ran CCleaner and Malwarebytes and restarted, and it went back to doing the same thing as before.

Does anyone have any suggestions? This is a peculiar issue to me, and I have no experience with anything like this.

Help is greatly appreciated!

I'd start off with a chkdsk /r C: , curious if you had corruption or similar from an unstable overclock.

Also, how default are we talking, like straight BIOS default where it also tunes your RAM down to 1333 ?

Nothing that serious, just an F5 "Reset to optimized defaults" from the main BIOS screen.

I'll be sure to run a chkdsk on the C drive as soon as I'm home today. My next step is to update the BIOS as well, any hope in that, or is it futile?

Thanks for the reply beers!

No worries :p

Hm, I'd probably manually go through and set things like RAM parameters, and ensure that the controller didn't revert to IDE although that board is new enough to roll AHCI by default.

Updating BIOS probably wouldn't fix your issue since you didn't have it prior to this on the same BIOS.

Alright, well I'll update back around 5PM EST or so this evening after running a chkdsk and looking through the mobo parameters. If you have any more thoughts before then, be sure and let me know, I need all the help I can get. This isn't like anything I've dealt with before. I like a challenge as much as the next guy but not when I spend a week or more trying to find a solution and end up having to restart the computer 2-3 times before anything works each time I want to start it up

Thanks again!
