hey guys...i am wondering if any of u are in the windows vista testing program....cuz i want to join...but i dont want to reinstall an OS that might potentially fail on me...so...any comments on the new OS? thanx

its not worth replacing xp with vista as a main o/s if you want to try it install it on another hdd

You mean replace with the BETA right?

Right now there are lots of problems with driver and app conflicts, so Vista isn't the best OS to use as a primary... yet.

Vista is... Not that great... to say the least...
I installed build 5384 and, well, all it is is eye candy. MS stopped caring about functionality to compete with OSX.
And it's not like OSX is good in the first place- while Apple becomes Microsoft and Micorsoft becomes more like Apple, the two OSes get increasingly similar. Now all that both companies are attempting is graphics card utilization.

Vista looks nice, but it's a clone of Windows XP, but very unstable.

You seriously need to read up on Vista. Eye candy is one of the new features, but they also add much more advanced security features, parental controls, a new API for graphics, DX10, ReadyBoost (uses your USB Key for "RAM), and tons of other features.

And of course its unstable, its a BETA! There sending them out to receive feedback on how to make it better before launch.

it's a ok OS I installed build 5384 first and then got RC1 over all its ok bad for gaming tho
It's because of the drivers, not the OS. ATI doesn't have an OpenGL driver released yet, so framerates in games severly suffer.

"It's because of the drivers, not the OS. ATI doesn't have an OpenGL driver released yet, so framerates in games severly suffer." what i mean is that if vista say takes 1gb of ram and your game takes 512 and you have 1gb it won't run so great

If you can get a hold on the next release, if any, just partition your hdd and install next to your first OS, assuming it's XP. However, what you may want to do first is check if your hardwares and softwares you use currently and most of the time are compatible with Vista.

Thats true, but Vista doesn't take up 1GB of RAM, it takes up around 512MB. But you're right, if you only have 1GB and you try to play games, it may lag for that reason.

It's like trying to run BF2 on an XP computer with only 512MB of RAM.

Vista is ok, I have used it on systems from XP Athlons to X2 AM2 systems, if you like fancy graphics you will like it, I am a 2000 freak and to me XP is just a, I guess you could say Windows 2000SE. I just call Vista windows 2000TE. I was hoping microsoft would come out with a complete different OS but my hopes were dashed. (To me) XP and Vista is just a fancier and fancier Windows 2000!!

Well, there's an option. I see the link still works and Microsoft hasn't taken it off yet. You can try this release and since you don't want to lose your existing os, you can partition it first, then install it on the new blank partition rather than on your existing OS partition.

Then final system requirements for windows vista seem outragous. I could run windows xp on a 333mrz with 256 meg of ram it may have been slow, but it worked. On vista you need at least a 800mrz processor and 512 meg of recommended ram and the graphics is 128 meg again recommended. If you want to do anything else that involves memory your gonna need like 2g.

Remember that when Vista is released, Windows XP will be 6 years old. Six years ago was the time when the P3's were out and we just started to break the 1Ghz barrier.

I have Vista RC1 loaded as a virtual PC. I have no idea how this compares with the stand alone installation but from what I have seen og it I am not that impressed. Granted MS has added a lot of features but for me I will be running XP Pro for a few years yet.

If you are interested in installing as a virtual PC download VPC2004 from the MS site. Free. Very easy to install etc.

I agree to an extent. After about 6 years i expected more of a change. But i dont see them changing it to much anytime soon. They seem to be very comfortable with there current setup.

If anything there testing the waters with office 12 (office 2007). First time theres gonna be a major change in the interface. I have a feeling that if they get good feedback from that then they might change the next os arround a little at a time. But who knows.

I do think it was a bad idea for them to rewrite the security stack though. One reason why im waiting a good 6 months to a year before i upgrade. Plus i wont get vista till i get a new machine anyways. I got a perfectly good machine with a good copy of xp. Why change right now? ;)

I have been running vista since the first original public offerings. Let me say since the original build i was using I forget the numbers its been almost a year now to now its a total different build. They have improved many things and as of now i'm running RC2 on my pc with no existing problems. The main problem is a lot of programs are not compatable unless you wait about 5 seconds after a failed install it will ask to install using reccomend settings aka xp and then every program i have used so far has worked. Wait until the final release to pass judgement on this os its not that bad at all really. When the final version comes out i expect it will be just like xp and have a service pack come out pretty soon after its released but oh well thats life and mistakes will happen. Microsoft has spent a lot of time and money on this one. Yes the requirements ask for more but you can run it on less. The specs quoted here:

are if you want to use the aero feature. Its very demanding on a computer and if you would read before hand it can be turned off and then the reccomended settings are equal to that of xp. I'm not a microsoft appologist in any manner in fact i hate a lot of their software but i think vista will blow minds of those who use it. If you are running a pc that doesnt even meet the minimum standards of vista anyway its time to upgrade becuase you are living in the past man way in the past...

Well it is interesting that they cant go to final bc i think there specification is they cant ship wit any more than 500 know bugs yet there still (even at rc2) around 1,000+ bugs. I expect a service pack soon afterwards as well...bc there gonna get the bare minimum then push it out and worry about the rest later.
