its not worth replacing xp with vista as a main o/s if you want to try it install it on another hdd
You seriously need to read up on Vista. Eye candy is one of the new features, but they also add much more advanced security features, parental controls, a new API for graphics, DX10, ReadyBoost (uses your USB Key for "RAM), and tons of other features.Vista is... Not that great... to say the least...
I installed build 5384 and, well, all it is is eye candy. MS stopped caring about functionality to compete with OSX.
And it's not like OSX is good in the first place- while Apple becomes Microsoft and Micorsoft becomes more like Apple, the two OSes get increasingly similar. Now all that both companies are attempting is graphics card utilization.
Vista looks nice, but it's a clone of Windows XP, but very unstable.
It's because of the drivers, not the OS. ATI doesn't have an OpenGL driver released yet, so framerates in games severly suffer.it's a ok OS I installed build 5384 first and then got RC1 over all its ok bad for gaming tho
If you can get a hold on the next release, if any, just partition your hdd and install next to your first OS, assuming it's XP. However, what you may want to do first is check if your hardwares and softwares you use currently and most of the time are compatible with Vista.hey guys...i am wondering if any of u are in the windows vista testing program....cuz i want to join...but i dont want to reinstall an OS that might potentially fail on me...so...any comments on the new OS? thanx
Thats true, but Vista doesn't take up 1GB of RAM, it takes up around 512MB. But you're right, if you only have 1GB and you try to play games, it may lag for that reason.what i mean is that if vista say takes 1gb of ram and your game takes 512 and you have 1gb it won't run so great

Well, there's an option. I see the link still works and Microsoft hasn't taken it off yet. You can try this release and since you don't want to lose your existing os, you can partition it first, then install it on the new blank partition rather than on your existing OS partition.Vista RC1 is available for download from microsoft's website here, however it will only work until 1st July 2007. The download is about 3GB for 32bit version, and 4GB for the 64bit version.
Then final system requirements for windows vista seem outragous. I could run windows xp on a 333mrz with 256 meg of ram it may have been slow, but it worked. On vista you need at least a 800mrz processor and 512 meg of recommended ram and the graphics is 128 meg again recommended. If you want to do anything else that involves memory your gonna need like 2g.
I was hoping microsoft would come out with a complete different OS but my hopes were dashed. (To me) XP and Vista is just a fancier and fancier Windows 2000!!

They have improved many things and as of now i'm running RC2 on my pc with no existing problems. The main problem is a lot of programs are not compatable unless you wait about 5 seconds after a failed install it will ask to install using reccomend settings aka xp and then every program i have used so far has worked.
