windows xp drivers

Hello, my first post, bear with me, I had to reformat and reload XP on my desktop a Dell Optiplex 260. Here is my problem, does it have to be the exact same disk as came with the PC, I have 3 disks and forgot which one it is, the key code is on the PC itself. The drivers won't load, cannot get an ethernet driver to load or any of the video or multimedia. Do I need to reformat on each try? I'm thinking maybe time for an upgrade with Windows 7, any help appreciated...thanks

thanks for the reply, I cannot get on the internet because of the ethernet driver issue, I have some dell utility driver disks but can't get it to look at the disks, my device manager shows the yellow question marks for these drivers and won't update

Use a thumb drive and the computer you are on now to download.
If what you are on is a mobile without a USB port find another computer to use.

Another Xp bites the dust! i had my Sony old Vaio with xp with 2 recovery discs and at certain point i couldn't deal with it because of missing drivers and support, hell with it; i got myself an Iso of Linux Xubuntu and i'm much happier then when i had xp it's faster and all and there isn't a thing that i can't do that i did with xp,so much so that most of my machines run Linux,no virus nothing i can go to shady sites no biggy, can download about every crap without being worried of malware virus and so on.

very strange, got the driver from dell using the lap top than i'm on now, next extracted to a dell folder on the C drive of my desk top, when I specify to look there to retrieve the driver, then OK goes dim, it won't let me choose that destination where the driver is, the only choice i get is the D drive, and there is a disk with drivers there but it searches and searches till it times out. I did a complete reformat so whatever bug caused this should be gone...or maybe not???

Do not update manually. Dell's drivers comes with a setup file that you run and it installs.

as in put the disk in and reinstall driver? that doesn't work, it reads the install for the OS, then it's like the CD drive cannot be read

No. Go to the folder where the driver was extracted to and run the setup application.

Yeah you need to double check the driver is correct. It helps to put your service tag in.

well know that I know I can put any of the versions that I have in there I'm in the process of formating again and would think XP Pro with SP3 would be the best OS I have. I did see a place to enter the "Service Tag", but I don't know what to look for, is it on the COA tag that has the product key on it?

If the key on the product key sticker says XP home edition then you won't be able to install XP Pro. That key will only work for XP home.

I actually have two COA tags, one for home, the other pro, I'm on the desktop now on the pro version, what is strange after the format it went right to the install and didn't request a product key, so far so good

I downloaded Java version 7 and still can't run the utility Okedokey suggested, figuring it would do a hardware scan telling me exactly what components were there, but it won't run telling me my Java is not up to date, maybe see if IE will work

Go back into device manager and see what drivers still need to be installed. Most of the time that intel utility will just tell you to go back to your computer manufacturer for drivers anyway.

Your service tag is a small black sticker located on the side of the computer below the XP Product sticker if it's a mini tower. If it's a full tower, it's located under the little door fpa that the Dell logo is placed on. It will say www.dell.com, followed by the Express Service Code and the Service Tag.

the only driver needed as indicated by device manager is the video driver, so it seems two ways will give me what video device I have, one being the service tag, second being a utility that scans the hardware, am I correct on that....and thanks for you help on this
