Windows XP vs Windows 7

I like to watch HD movies + Play games on my computer(Those are my main uses)

I currently have Windows XP x32
I am wondering if I should upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate or not

If i upgrade, would it make my computer run a lot faster?

I also wanted to know if my computer setup is compatible with windows 7.
It works fine with windows xp but im not sure with windows 7

Here are my computer specs(I have a 500w powersupply rather than the original)

I did not need Ultimate 7. I would go with Pro 7 and has lots of options and security.
Ultimate is mainly i think the language pack which i don't need.
No, i do not see any specs except 500w power supply so far.
 
You could run Windows 7 perfectly fine. However, there is no need to go for Ultimate. Home Premium is fine for the general users.
 
I wouldn't run XP if you can run 7. I love XP, but there are so many security flaws and exploits that can be had on it, not to mention the lack of support for it now. Granted, if you have a good anti-virus and firewall that always helps, and if your still using older hardware drivers wont be a issue. However I say if you can run 7, make the upgrade.
 
well i know for sure i can "handle" 64bit windows 7 ultimate
I'm just wondering if it is worth it to upgrade from 32bit XP
would the performance be significantly faster?

you said power supply then updated with a comment after the fact. thats ok.
after my post. No problem. were good. And i seen the edit addition.

I state again, don't waste your money on Ultimate. There is nothing special about it like Vista. Go Home Prem or Pro.

well im saying ultimate because my dad bought the windows 7 ultimate and he doesnt need it anymore

Windows XP vs Windows 7 Response

1- Make sure you get a x64 processor, the max ram for a x86 configured system is 4gb. having sdram is good that means it will be quicker as it is synced with the system's clock.

2. Windows 7 will require more system resources to run thus slowing down the system... If I may make a recommendation... Get an SSD drive. I know it is alot more expensive per gig, but for movies the faster read write times will allow you to jump to a section and not have to wait for it to buffer for so long... unless you watch them from beginning to end

3- The real question is do you watch your movies on disks and play them or do you watch them off your hard drive....

4- You will see no real difference between xp and 7 when it comes to video watching... you should really ask yourself about your system's hardware...

5- is that video card supported by that motherboard... Remember you have to make sure that all hardware is compatible with the motherboard when your buying the components separably

6- how much do you know about computers. It looks like your buying a bunch of parts... but I can't find support for the sapphire x and your ram card. at the amd motherboard's support listing. some people think that any hardware can be supported by any motherboard. That is not the case. The Bios( the motherboards starting software) has to support it. just because it has a standard connection doesn't mean that they will all work together.

7- What video card are you getting

8- with movies performance of your computer is key.. remember your computer is only as fast as it's slowest component
 
Win 7 is totally worth it. Its a supported OS and you will find it works great. Why not dual boot, use both and report back.

I second this i have Windows XP on one hard drive and Windows 7 on the other both have worked brilliantly without fail. Also if one hard drive dies at least you are not without a computer until you get another hard drive.

What i recommend you do is buy another hard drive like 1tb put Windows 7 on that keep Windows XP on the current drive and you can then keep all your files on the XP drive.

Also if you want a more responsive speedy system i suggest you upgrade your ram from 4 gb to 8 gb the difference will be defiantly worth it just make sure you buy 64 bit Windows 7 OS I would recommend Win 7 Pro.

One thing is that 7 is not fully compatible with XP. There are many programs that were developed for XP than will not run on 7 and even with Virtual XP it may not work. So if you have a programs running only in XP that you like, it is a consideration. I have several of them, one is Pinnacle Studio 9, that will not run on 7. And I am happy with it, and not about to buy an upgrade just to run it on 7. Specially when programs are used outside the Internet environment anyway, and security is not an issue. Others are Asssembly Language Assemblers for Microprocessors that I use, which are really DOS based, and no longer available and thus can not be upgraded. So, there are reasons to keep running XP!
 
I had previously believed that XP was the best OS in the universe, but I just installed 7 pro 64 bit and it is so quick and functional. Love it!
 
I've only just started using win7 after about 8 years of enjoying XP. There are a few things that I can't get used to that I probably just need to adjust some settings to slowly adjust to the new OS.

The main thing that I can't get used to is how small everything is on screen compared to XP. I have a 21" widescreen monitor set to the recommended 1920x1080 in win7 and everything looks like reading a newspaper whereas in XP (not sure what res setting) text was comfortable to read like in a kids book lol. Will reducing resolution help and how will this affect other things?

Yes you can always decrease the screen resolution to see the text clear,but on that way your screen resolution will be a lot smaller and if for example you have many icons such as on the desktop,the entire screen will be filled with them and the rest might not be even visible if it does not fit on the screen because of the small resolution.
So why not simply put the highest resolution that you monitor supports and THEN adjust the size of the icons and text until you find the one you can read and see easily?
You can adjust the size of almost anything such as icons,text,labels,windows,buttons,colors and so on...
You can do all that in the advanced appearance options.

By the way if ALL your programs and ALL your games work great on Windows XP then you don't need Windows 7.It is a waste of money.Unless if you use programs which are SPECIFICALLY designed for Windows 7 or play games which require DirectX 10 or newer versions.But 99% of the programs and games fully work under Windows XP perfectly so as long as you do not use any of the programs or games which can run ONLY in Windows 7 then Windows XP will be more than enough for you trust me.

So if ALL your programs and ALL your games work great on Windows XP then you don't need Windows 7.It is a waste of money.Rather save that money for something else you might need.Keep in mind that on this planet there are SO MANY hungry kids and they would do anything for a peace of bread.Not to mention HOW HAPPY they would be if they have food AND money AND simple old computer running simple old Windows 95...
I am saying this because every day I see people complaining that they have "only" 4 GB of RAM while so many other people and kids especially do not even have enough food to stay alive........God......that so fuc!king sucks!!!
