What would a system require to work the fastest with software such as AutoCAD?

Dual cpu's? lots of Ram?

is a dual cpu mobo classified as a server mobo?
with the exception of the skulltrail?

would Dual Xeon Quads do the trick?
some of the cpu's are pretty expensive... but would it be worth it?
what OS would be best for this sort of stuff?
im thinking 8GB ram as well.

also what would be better... a single cpu that is twice as expensive? or dual cpu's that are half as expensive... i would think 2 cpu's would perform better... but yeah

any thoughts on what a decent system for extreme performance with autocad would be?
thankyou :)

come on people. please help me?

these systems will be running autocad and maya 3d.
would the systems benefit from dual cpu's? and what would be a decent amount of ram for each?
money really isnt an issue but who wants to buy stuff if they dont really need it?
(apart from me buying a quad) :D

8 or 16 GB ram? this might be overkill. im just asking.

also what OS?

they dont sell XP anymore do they?
can you run the software mentioned on linux and would that be satisfactory?
or would vista ultimate/business 64-bit be the best?

as i said before... i would be wanting a quadro gpu right?

i think a skulltrail board would suffice, 8gb of fb-dimm buffered ram or something like that, vista ultimate 64 bit, look at either a coolermaster cosmos S or one of these: http://www.mountainmods.com/computer-cases-c-21.html?osCsid=vt9p975juo8po5ubivhpn50n95 as for the cpu either this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117163 or this, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117138 as for graphics look at these: http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro_fx_5600_4600.html
p.s.-i know some of the stuff is newegg, but thats just to give you an idea
edit: or this: http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro_fx_4700_x2.html

ill tell you what. ill put together a build on newegg and see what you think.

um... whats the quadro4 thing im seeing?

also just a noob do you have msn?
its hard to ask these questions and wait a day for a responce haha :)

what will perform the best as far as the rendering in maya goes?

if you actully going to overclock, if i remember correctly a mix of sticks tends to work better, FUGGER had like 6gb worth of 2gb sticks then a pair of 1gb sticks with a higher fsb or something like that, it gives you the ability to oc if you want to and its generally faster, and im only gunna be gone for about 5 hours, and i dont have msn sorry =\

heres a system i quickly put together.

what raid setup would be best for rendering with maya 3d?
and would it be better to have a different setup for use with Autocad?

well actually this is gonna be for like a lab of computers. budget isnt exactly limited.

lets say i need 20 systems...

isnt the skulltrail a gaming mobo?

skulltrail is just a dressed up server mobo, it has more features, its the 5400 chipset as far as i know, if you feel like it, i believe you can sli the the quadros's too, if its truly unlimited, you should get 5 ssd's for the os and software and put them in raid 5, then get a 1tb drive for storage, i dont know how well the raid controllers play with the server boards either.
p.s.-the reason i was so late getting on is my satillite internet dropped through the sky

haha... so lets put it this way. i wouldnt like to spend over $7000 USD

now if there are 20-30 of these in a room im thinking you might want to have like a ghost image that can be quickly reinstalled whenever is necessary right?
if that did happen then it wouldnt really be possible for the users to save their work on the systems themselves right? as you never know when the computer might get re-ghosted. so what would happen about that?

would quadro sli be worth it then?

basically... in maya 3d, is the rendering gonna benefit enough to justify 2 cpu's and 2 quadro's?

the more graphics cores there are, the less workload on the cpu's, and if you can backup everything every night or something like that a bunch of raptor x's could be justified, im thinking around 6 or there are some 15k drives around, i cant remember what they're called, but i can remember they werent cheap, so mabye 4 or them or something and a 500gb for storage
edit: what do you mean by ghosting, backing something up/cloning it, and where are these going to be used exactly?

right now im thinking if having to systems.

one with a Quadro and more ram for Maya. and another one just for autocad.

the plan is to have like 2 labs.

with say... 20 identical systems in each.
one lab for autocad. another for maya.

for each lab you would have a hard drive image containing everything necessary installed. then whenever you needed to you could re-image the hard drive and it would be sort of fresh.

i would like each user to have to login to the system and when the saved there work it would be on their own "drive" that would be stored on the servers.

so no data was actually saved on the systems themselves. therefore allowing them to be re-imaged at any time

seems to me the computers at school are this way, as in they only save the os word and some other programs, so if we want to save anything we have to save it to a flash drive or the server, i think another computer that can save all the information for a user would also be a good idea, probably wouldnt have to be very powerful, 4600+ and maybe a gig of ram and a couble terabyte drives would make a decent server

how about mac's for a workstation?
would a mac pro offer decent performance?
it can have dual xeon cpu's and an FX5600

but its more expensive :(

i have noticed that Maya will run on mac. autocad will not.

so is there a mac equivelent of autocad that alot of mac users use that i dont know about? or arent mac's used for that sort of programming?

and yet another question.

3ds max or maya?

this software will be used to make 3d versions of autodesk designs...

basically as a promotional thing.

like just imaging a house is designed in autocad... that will then be used to build it.

but then someone will come along in maya or 3ds max and make a 3d version of it so people can look at it in detail or it can appear as part of a presentation on a new house design or something...

so for that use, which would be better?

stick with homebuilt, i know the macs are appealing, but i the only thing i would use them for is audio editing, and there are new fb-dimms out now, $260 for 4gb of fb-dimms@800mhz rather than 667mhz

ok then yeah i wont go apple.

so 3ds Max or Maya?

which one would be better for modeling buildings and then flying a camera round the whole thing and record what the camera is seeing?

i have done this in 3ds max many times... but never used maya. so whats gonna be better for that sorta task?
