X2 4400 vs X2 FX60

What is the difference between the 4400 and the FX60? Assuming the 4400 was oc-ed to 2.6 GHz (same as FX60). I'm just thinking if its worth the extra £400 to get an FX60.

i think the FX series has fully unlocked multipliers to make it so dam easy to overclock. ive heard of many people getting it to 3.0Ghz easily.

The FX-60 has 128 kb of L1 cache per core where as the 4400 X2 has only 64 kb per core. I dont' know how much this helps though, and i don't think its worth 600 dollars.

Hehe

I would go for the X2 4400+ and overclock it. It should not be a hard task at all with a good motherboard. The L1 cache should not play much of a role and remember that the FX-60 is an exclusive line of processors. AMD hence prices is accordingly. It's a smart marketing trick for them to use. I bet you the manufacturing price of the processors is about the same as the normal X2s. However, with an OC'd X2, you should achieve roughly the same level of performance for much less.

The FX-60 and the X2-4400 have the same amount of L1 and L2 cache because they both are Toledo cores. I would buy the Opteron 175 over either which has a Denmark core which is really just a slightly better Toledo core. The X2-4400 AMD the Opteron 175 are essentially the same CPU except that the Opterons are made with a slightly higher standard. Like the X2-4400 they are default clocked at 2.2 Ghz, they have 128+128 L1 and 2X1 meg of L2 and like the X2-4400 they're about $500 retail.

I have the Opteron 175 currently over-clocked to 2.67 Ghz with memory timings of 2-3-2-7 1T. Faster than a stock FX-60 for less than half the price and I don't think that the FX-60 will clock any higher than a 175.

1. You are right they all have 128 kb per core i was thinking about the Manchester for some reason.

2. The FX-60 will clock to 3 ghz easy way higher than the Opteron or the X2 because of the unlocked multiplier.

3. I would also buy an Opteron, but I got the 170 which clocks the same as the 175. By buying the 175 your just spinning your wheels because they are the same core and won't clock any higher.

4. You gave him the right advice with the wrong reason.

As a summary, can the 4400 be or not be overclocked to the same level as the fx60, assuming i do have a decent mobo.

Yes, it can be overclocked to 2.6 with a decent stepping and a decent mobo but i would take a look at this
because its about 70 dollars cheaper and can be clocked to the same speed as a FX-60 also.

Sorry, i meant can the 4400 be oc-ed to the same level that an fx60 could be oc-ed to.

Also, what is the difference in performance between opterons and athlon X2's, say, for example, between the above opteron and the FX60? I'm basically gonna buy a superb comp in just over a month, one that will perform very well for a long time.

I guess what I'm essentially asking here is what processor should I get for an awesome gaming comp, and I'm assuming that both X2's and Opterons can use the same motherboard.

1. No the FX-60 and the X2 cannot be overclocked to the same level, this is due to the FX-60's unlocked multiplier

2. The Opteron and the X2 4400+ if overclocked to 2.6 ghz will perform the same as the stock FX-60 (which is why i don't see paying the extra 600 dollars US.)

3. If i were you i would go for the Opteron 170 because it is cheaper, and will clock essentialy the same as the 4400+ if not a little higher.

4. And yes Opteron's and X2's can use the same motherboards.

If I forgot to answer any of questions, something isn't clear or you have more questions just ask.

fx-60 will overclock like butter. that's the difference mainly... 3.2-3.4ghz is not unheard of with some water cooling.

i have a toledo core x2 3800. it certainly does NOT have that much l2 cache.

i thought you had a manchester core. which would be half the cache L2 of that of a toledo

Ok, thats fair enough. The website im buying off doesnt have Socket 939 Opteron's, so it'll have to be the FX-60.

I'm buying off here because I'm not earning a great deal, and they have a buy now pay later scheme.

I don't suppose anyone knows any other websites with decent components, based in the UK, and have a buy now pay later scheme? A bit off-topic, I know.

I don't know of any other site because i live in the US but i looked in your sig at the rig you want to build and it is perfect the way it is i wouldn't get anything else or change anything great job.
