X2...the 3800+ and the 4200+

If you've got a computer and you are upgrading..I'm pretty sure ANYBODY has the 30 bucks to bump a bit higher.

I'm going to go with the 7300GT, and the Athlon x2 4200+...going to be a huge upgrade from my P4 and mx440. Also the 1GB DDR400 RAM is going to kick the shit out of my 768mb of pc133 RAM :D

And going to kill my wallet lol

I havent read the entire thread, so bare with me if you already answered this.

Are you using the computer for gaming? If so, I would highly recommend getting something better then the 7300GT, since that card is a budget card, and will have trouble playing the new games at decent settings.

Not really, when I upgrade, I have a set budget (I'm 15), and when I max out, that's where I'm stuck.

Ah but there is always somewhere that you can cut out $30 in your budget to upgrade the cpu.

I'm playing games on medium settings decent right now, and if you look at my current system specs they are pretty sad. When I upgrade to a 64bit X2 4200+, 256mb 7300GS on PCI-e, 1GB DDR400 I think I will be fine. And thanks to everyone that posted, very helpful.

I would say yes.

Someone else will probably say, no because you can overclock the X2 3800+ to X2 4200+ speeds.

Then I would come back and say, but you could also overclock the X2 4200+ to X2 4600+ speeds.

Just spend the extra $30, it really is not that much money.

yes, and i would say you can overclock it to 5000+ speeds :D
others have gotten it to 3ghz quite easily.. it all depends on what processor you get, out of what batch that was manufactured. not the model.

if you want to know what the difference between the x2 3800+ and 4200+ when it comes to overclocking, talk to the people on overclock.net because they'll tell you. everyone here thinks the extra multiplier makes a difference whereas i believe you can easily tweak a motherboard to let you raise the fsb as high as you want while barely creating any instability. some overvoltage may be in order though. thats what i did and im running 400mhz faster than a 4200+

ill bet conroe is an overclocking beast though, thats what i would get.
