x850xt temperature problems?

I've heard people say they downloaded atitool to change the fan speed on the x850XT series to 100% all the time cuz the fan comes set at 5% then doesn't speed up until 90 F..I just bought an x850xt and plan on doing the same.
Same happened to me, but it was stuck at 14%. It didn't crash the game, but it did overheat.

Initially I had more problems with the board temps being 4-6C higher then the cpu. That was due to the style of the old case when I replaced the inners there(cpu, board, video card). Upon switching to the new case with the extra sized fans along with adding another pair of 120mm fans to the clear side panel the board temps and cpu as well dropped drastically. That also served to cool down both memory and the new video as well as the rest of the case. After running day and night the latest temps were cpu = 32C board = 33C

I set mine to 95% and seatoold showed that I just needed a defrag.

Defragged, nothing better. Meh - I put it back to agp8x. I can't see anything else. :)

What make and model supply are you running there? Have you checked out the voltage setting in the bios and other temps?

Although the make isn't a top choice the concern here is on internal temps inside the case itself. If you don't have enough good air flow you'll run into the same thing that happened here with the new board in the old case. That may what you are seeing there. You could try removing the side panel and pointing a small fan inside to see if that helps.

ATI sent me a 'resolution': "Install the Catalyst 6.10 drivers released on 10/31"

I took a 10fps hit in CSS and haven't tried other games yet. It'll be tomorrow before I can do that.

When you say 10fps hit, do you mean they lowered by 10fps, or raised by 10fps?

lowered

BF2 is ok since I dropped the dynamic lighting and shadows to [less-than-zero]

I'll toy with it later. A friend of mine has the same hardware but an older video card (X800pro) and can get 1184xsomething/full at like 100 frames. That comes in handy when someone throws a grenade and explodes a billion polygons everywhere and the frames drop 50 fps.

I don't know what I'm getting yet. Need to go into the game and run "renderer.drawfps 1".

Probably tomorrow sometime.
