any of you guys think this is true
if it is i think this could be majorly bad for sonys playstation 3 because the 360 will be the first system to support both HD DVD and Blu Ray media, is this the final nail in the coffin for sony?

with Sony sitting on the board of directors of the company that designed Blu ray... I can see it being very unlikely,

Factor in the probably cost of the additional drive were it to somehow happen and it would become near pointless.....

i have heard this also. i heard that if microsoft thinks bluray is better and will get more sales they will make a bluray drive like the hddvd one now

360 + blu ray drive is cheaper than a ps3 or a blu ray drive

Not a chance in hell. They would have to offer the add-on drive for less than $200 for that to be true, and that's highly unlikely. If anything, if this was to be true, I believe it would be a major boost to the Blu-Ray cause, and would even possibly increase opinion on the PS3. Consider you get that console AND a B-R drive for $600, or you can just a 360 for $400 (without even an HD-DVD drive that you have to pay $200 for) all of a sudden you're at the same price; seems like a no-brainer to me.

in the UK the PS3 is about $900 and the 360 is $500, leaving $400 for a blu ray drive, oh and a Blu Ray player is about $1000 so you decide :)

I'm sorry to say it but this is bull, and here's why:

a) Microsoft have been ripping the piss out of Sony for including a 'pointless' Blu-Ray disc player into the PS3. How would it look if they suddenly did a 180 and said: "Actually...Blu-Ray is awesome...definately worth a $400 upgrade" ?

b) An external Blu-Ray disc player for the 360 would by capable of film content but not games. PS3 can do both.

c) Microsoft are too proud to admit that they should have included an internal high definition media drive (HD-DVD or BR) from the very beginning and to do a half-assed attempt now would make them look foolish.

I totally agree :D i dont really like either company but i can see PS3 making some headway if more titles come out

This is complete nonsense. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Blu-Ray patented and made by Sony exclusively? Blu-Ray is Sony's technology unlike HD-DVD so rumors about Microsoft having a Blu-Ray player are delusional and only rumors.

its owned by 17 large companies and backed by 5 large media companies, and its not made exclusively by sony, thats nonsense, the first blu ray player was made by samsung. the drive wouldn't be a microsoft product it would be made by a third party vendor.

That's why I said correct me if I'm wrong....

Plus I'm not talking about players, but "Blu-Ray" technology itself. I thought that was a Sony Patent? Does anyone know if it is or is not?

i dont think so (correct me if im wrong ;)) but i think its just been taken on board by sony, its their chosen format, like microsoft and HD DVD, the technology itself was developed by someone else

I believe that the primary research company for Blu-Ray was Sony, with the various other companies providing resources for it. I don't believe the first blue laser was created by Sony, but they were the point-man on bringing into an application for electronics.

this is quite ironic

You know the CEO of Sony Entertainment just stepped down and resigned...

Maybe he got out before it got too hot.

Blu Ray vs HDDVD is kind of like Mac VS PC debate, both sides give out misinformation and make things look deluded.

In all honesty, blu ray and HD DVD are pretty much equal technologies as far as capacity and quality go. The only differences will be the pricing, and the consumers. Sony has made mistakes before, but last I read blu ray was actually leading in sales, however we all know sales and statistics can also be manipulated.

The main downfall is that sony told the adult industry, NO blu ray for you. What an idiotic mistake considering there are on average 12,000 adult DVDs pressed every year. That is a very huge market.

I believe it's somewhere around 80% Blu-ray to 20% HD-DVD, and Blu-ray can hold about 3 HD-DVD discs on one Blu-ray.

not anymore, HD DVD just spanned up to the 45 gig range, haven't you heard?

That article is old, but its a scaleable technology which is what HD DVD claimed in the begining. See the problem is, most people automatically think more is better, even though they display the same quality, and NO MOVIE, NO VIDEO GAME, NO ANYTHING NEEDS 50 GIGS at this point in time. Therefore, blu ray is kind of moot

HD DVD will have to boost its capactiy sooner or later to the consumer market to compete with blu ray, with that much money involved they probably already thought of that.

I got ya :) I could have sworn I heard that Sony was the "producer and maker" of the Blu-Ray technology but I guess I heard wrong, my bad. However a company by the name "Sonic Industries" has a major chunk of the Blu-Ray patent. Maybe I got Sonic and Sony mixed up, who knows.

But I'm a little confused as to why MS would put a Blu-Ray player in the Xbox when the 360 Elite has an HD-DVD player. How dumb would that be?
