Simcity5 a false start?

I'm actually happy I don't buy brand new games for a huge amount of money. No seriously you guys should wait like two or three years, prices will drop and you'll be sure that you can either play the game or not.
That's what I do. I got Need For Speed Hot Pursuit almost 2 years after it was launched, and I got Dirt 3 second hand a year after it was launched. Got both a lot cheaper than they cost when they first came out.

Im sorry. But it doesnt make sense to buy a game 2 years after its release to me. Not only do you spend 2 years missing out on the experience, or lack there of depending on the game, but by then most likely the sequel if there is one is being released leaving you a generation behind.

Granted there are some games that dont need to be bought as soon as they hit shelves, but there are others that should be....

Theres nothing wrong with playing an old game by any means, but to be playing an old game for the first time is meh. I still enjoy playing my playstation 1 and still have most of the games for it, however Im not playing them for the first time :)

2 years is too long to wait to buy a game. The price usually drops within 6 months depending on how well the game sells. Good sellers usually stay $60 here in the US for up to a year.

I think maybe the most puzzling thing to me is that you can still buy a new copy of GTA 4, a game that was released in 2008. The fact that there are still so many new copies of that game must mean it didnt do as well as Rockstar hoped..... but its still $20.

If it is a single player game, it is worth waiting. You are not missing out on a thing, you can still play it as many times as you like, you can still play it how you like, the experience is the same as day 1, if not better due to less bugs and additional content.

Multiplayer games are a whole different story. They do not last forever and by waiting a year or two the community is much weaker, that is if the servers are still up

Your GTA4 theory is completely unfounded, you can still buy a new copy of CoD2, Theme Hospital or css. The GTA 4 games are not original copies, they still manufacture them. GTA4 sold extremely well and still has demand, hence the price. There is nothing puzzling about it at all

Let's see...

Always online DRM
Game runs on EA servers rather than locally
Reduced city sizes, smallest of any sim city game
Simplified gameplay

And people wonder why other people hate EA? They ruin games and make money out of it.

Not as bad as activision, look at the CoD series. The first 4, maybe CoD5, were the best. After that the series became a money cow. Just a bit extra clunkyness and weapons that take up 1/3 of the screen, but better graphics must make it a better game.

I still don't get why DRM exists anyway. Yeah good against piracy but its bad for the people that frequently install and uninstall and then re-install the game, I am included in that select group of people.

True. I enjoy older games way more than the newer ones anyway. Go back like 5 years and any game older always had some spark to it. Now its just because of the look of the game makes it a good game, terrible track of thought as gameplay + story or multiplayer gameplay etc is more important than the aesthetics of the game.

I agree with this, its a game and in this ages there are updates, matches, players that we miss out. I bought BF3 1 week after release and it had epic players, took a few months break came back and it was still fun, but it is lacking the awesome players it had while it had launched.
Also $20 for GTA 4? Its like $6 at my area.

Exactly. I don't play online anyway so waiting isn't an issue for me. I'm not really too fussed about getting the latest games anyway, and with Need for Speed at least the newer ones tend to be crap.

Then Im confused at why they are still manufacturing a 5 year old game. I dont really see any demand for it.

Not for you because you already have it...

I only bought GTA last year on Steam sales and during said sale i believe it was in the top 5 most sold games on Steam. There are a lot of others like me that wait for good deals, offers or discounts when it comes to single player games.

Then consider it is a gfwl game. Once activated a finite number of times, the key is invalid. For someone that has used all of those activations but wants to install again, the option is to contact Microsoft and wait an age or buy another copy on the cheap.

On that same note, consider someone that has lost or broken their disc. Microsoft or rockstar would replace the disk if it is scratched or broken, but for a price, most likely higher than the cost of a new copy. If you don't have the disc any more, buying a new copy is your only way, be it physical or digital.

Then consider those with the game are a minority. Someone may buy it on a whim or get given a copy by someone else. More copies right there.

The demand is not like at launch, but it is still there. It is the same with films, there is not a huge demand for classic films, but they are still sold and bought because there is still that small demand.

PC games live pretty much forever, it is only the consoles that stop completely

=EDIT=

Should clarify on the last sentence - single player PC games live pretty much forever. That will be a flaw in this game. People still play Sim City 4, heck they still play Sim City 2000, but when EA have lost interest in Sim City 5 (need I point out MoH ;)), will they release a single player patch or just let it go?

I don't see why you have to buy it as soon as it's out... I bought Assassin's Creed I and II in the same bundle for 10€ and my experience playing it didn't change at all.

And why should Rockstar stop selling GTA IV?? Thank god they still are, I bought for five euros ;).

See how I do? I wait and it gets cheaper, my playing experience is the same as when you bought it.

The game has now been patched and works beautifully. Its a different game to SimCity 4 but the changes are for benefit in my view. You can still modify everything, just via a different more intuitive method.

Interestingly the game utilises 98% of one gpu and 30% of the other. Consistently. I have everything turned to max and only play this game at 1080p. This is because (i found out), the GlassBox rendering egnine does things differently and utilises CUDA cores. So it is more than just a statistics machine. It renders each sim and object as a module on the GPU.

It is very pretty thats for sure.

Considering

What the new game adds to the experience, aside from beautifully rendered, three-dimensional graphics, is a vastly diversified tool kit -- one that more closely approximates the options of modern urban planners.

Although considering new solar energy is generators are cheaper than any fossil fuel in Australia now,

they should change the relative costs on the Oceana servers to reflect this. I might suggest it. That way you can build solar for cheaper per MW. Totally changes the game.

As it stands, its way out.

^^^ Out of 10 what would you give it? I have been itching to buy this game. I haven't played Sim City since Sim City 2000 and was excited for this game to come out. Since release though, i have been debating since hearing about the troubles and not seeing a decent review.

Just buy Sim City 4 on steam for $20 and forget about this cheap imitation that's locked to online servers :o

Have you played it? You can play in sandbox and private so for the end user, if you have internet, the result is exactly the same.

THe game is great, id give it 8.

This new one doesn't seem as good as the old ones. SimCity 4 was the best one released!

Still my all time favorite game!
