Windows Vista from XP - Worth it?

I just installed Vista Ultimate tonight and using it as I type this. I absolutely love it. I have not had any network problem or UI problems being too complicated (you can switch to classic view); I did. RAM hog? Yes, it's true 1GB minimum it seems, luckily I have two. I am going to be sad when I log off and back into XP. My roomate is jealous.

I'm considering switching because of the "ReadyBoost" feature. I recently bought a SanDisk USB Drive (2 gigs) that is ReadyBoost enabled.

I also want Halo2 PC. I just wish you could use XP themes.... Does anyone know of software capable of this?

Has anyone tried ReadyBoost and seen major improvements? (If you did... I think I'm gonna shoot myself for not buying the 4 gig)

Ready boost does not work well it is slower than your harddrive so your pagefile system would be better than readyboost.

Now it seems Vista is only taking about 700 MB of ram mininal load. My average on XP was 500, so I am content.

If all your doing is basic home stuff, then I can see how you like it, but I can especially see where tlarkin is coming from. From an IT perspective, Vista is horrible. Many people are actually calling it ME II, haha

i would stick with Xp mate to be honest,Vista isnt bad and it actualy gets things done faster like when your installing things etc but i dont realy see why people are using it other than for DX10,Isnt there a thread about you could possibly use DX10 on Xp somehow anyway?

I have Vista Ultimate but im not using it on this system at the moment,Im keeping it for my new system.

@ tlarkin - totally agree

oh, the things we do in the life..lol
not me, MS can count me out, im nowhere near to get vista, XP works so does my intel Mac..if i could just get ppl to use intel MACS

It sounds like a serious RAM hog, 700MB  I use 312MB in XP, so there's one of the main reasons I won't be switching.

I don't have a DX10 card anyway, so there's nothing I'm gaining there...

It isn't worth it, thanks for the input :)

700MB:eek:....nah it used around 560Mb on my system,I think it depends what antivirus and other applications you have also starting up with it.
i had Avast and before that Clamwin antivirus and they didnt realy use that much system resources.

Its currently using 402Mb of ram in xp now with 887Mb free which isnt bad.
im sticking with Xp until i can get a new pc.

I have a G15 so it says the percentage of RAM that is used. On Vista it was always about 40-45% at idle with 2GB of RAM, but when XP it was around 15-20% with 2GB.

Vista is definately out of the question then now, I'll wait till it's needed.

I don't really get MS, why make something look great, but perform like a bar steward? :P

Lol :D

Vista only realy looks good,But once you have used it for a few weeks the Vista theme just gets boring.

i prefer to stick to the good old Xp and customise it with my own theme:D

I prefer the looks of the new OSX ;)

I've been using the Vista theme for ages, since I started that thread on it, I can't say I get bored of it, but I know what you mean.

Yeah OSX looks really good, it's so neat!

Because they can and people want stuff that looks new and different even if they don't like it initially. Look at XP, everyone was on about how much RAM it took to run compared to Win9x but no one seems to mind now.

Agreed, why do you think they made a version called "Ultimate"? Every person wants it but 99.9% of home users don't even need features like encrypted file system and the ability to connect to domain level networks. Its a complete marketing ploy.

My Mac and My PC running Linux both with 3D desktop environments take up about 80% less system resources than windows vista.

I put Vista Business on my work PC, and at home I still have a factory sealed copy of MS Vista Ultimate which I got for free through a MS/Intel deal. It won't go on my PC until I have to use it. I think I may skip vista all together and just get vienna when it comes out.

Or just keep using my Macs instead.

The one thing that people feared the most when XP first came out was the new product activation process. You could no longer reinstall Windows countless times on the same system if you goobered something and simple wipe the drive(like some I know) for a fresh install. You had to go to MS if you reinstalled more then 2 or three times within a certiain period of time.

When installing Vista and reinstalling it twice later here to correct the multiboot it was instant activation seen now. But there's a big lack of Vista ready softwares as well as drivers(still) and of course SP2s to fix all bugs. With any new version of Windows expect many things "won't" run on it.

hey now that i have vista, i can compare it to win xp. when i first started ib xp i thought the eye candy was nice but the system requirements were crazy, and it had ALOT of glitches. but come on cut microsoft some slack eh? vista will be the next big thing, and its GOING TO HAVE SOME MESS-UPS but so did every single operating system ever made before. people are always going to find ways NOT to like things, well, why dont people stop and think. 'you know, xp DIDNT look as good as vista, and vista has the side bar, which makes app launching and useful tools more manageable and clean, and the system requirements are high, but my computers only idling about 200MB higher then xp, which isnt bad, considering the eye candy, the side bar, the music gadget i have open, and firefox.'

Exactly how I feel.
