on newegg they are the exact same price, which is better? probably the 5000 i think, and this would allow me to upgrade to the phenoms later, if they are as good as they are cracked up to be :D

well if your thinking of the upgrade i would go 5000+ but they both good cpu's

But if you got the 4500 that would allow you to upgrade to Penryn. Which will be better than phenoms.

Not the Penryn... Penryn is mobile and the replacement of Merom. Maybe WolfDale or Yorkfield... And the E4500 is gonna OC better, E4500 +1.

Arent the new amd chips using a new AM2 + socket design anyway?

Yeah, your right.

Doesn't the 5000 black edition have unlocked multiplier? So wouldn't it overclock better?

It overclocks better then the previous X2 models, however it still doesnt overclock as well as the Core 2 Duo's.

ok now that i have figured out that the e4500 will OC better, what about tomshardware.com? they have an E4300 and a normal X2 5000, and it appears the 5000 blows it out of the water stock, is it true for the x2 5000 black and the e4500?

also, doesnt the 5000 black have a much larger cache then the e4500? its hard to decide between stock speed and cache for the x2 5000, and overclocking for the e4500

i was thinking though, for ten dollars more then the 5000 black edition, i could get an x2 5600 2.8 GHZ and get something like 20 dollars off a combo motherboard lol

EDIT: oops i was wrong the x2 5000 actually has only 1MB L2 cache, and the e4500 has 2MB

On the X2 line, IMHO i would only get a F3 windsor (the 5200/5600/6000/6400) they are all the same chips. Ex: if you were to OC the 5000+ to ~3.3Ghz, it would still be slower that a stock 3ghz windsor, the cache kills it.

Or like the others suggested, if you dont mind overclocking get a E4300... but what are they averaging on a stable OC?

yeah definetely stable. others were saying that with water cooling they could get their e4500 up to 4GHZ stable, but im not really able to verify that

E4400 performs very close to 5000+, so I think E4500 would perform as good or even better

I would get E4500 if I were you

it is starting to seem like a better idea, thanks. i would like to ask though, does anyone believe AMD when they claim that the phenoms will totally obliterate intels next series? if so im torn between getting more performance now or having the ability to upgrade more later... grrrr so confusing

If your getting it just to overclock, by the way over 99% of people dont, get the E4500. If your not overclocking get the X2 5000 even though it does overclock pretty good for a 5000. As far as the Phenom, nobody knows how well it will do aganist Intel, no benchmarks yet. There was a few Barcelona benchmarks but compared to the Phenom theres quite a bit of difference, different memory controller, different Hypertransport, different stepping, will be different motherboard and chipsets.

oh so i wouldnt be able to run a phenom off a current motherboard anyways? well hell screw AMD then my fanboy days are over

Yes the Phenom will run on a AM2 board with a bios update. The only thing is if you have a lower end board they might not update the bios for it. You know Motherboard makers want you to buy new boards so I say just the mid and upper range boards will get the bios update to keep people from raiding there company:P. If you have a AM2 board just email the company and ask if there going to supply a bios update for the Phenom.

Yeah, AM2+ will work on AM2, the only difference is something to do with memory, which i doubt you would see a difference. Like stranglehold said you may need a bios update to support a phenom. I plan on getting a X4 with my board and i suppose it will need a update :(

I hate bios updates, scares me
