[Help] Issues with my computer

Hey,

Having a number of problems with my computer at the moment.

- Can't open My Computer, My Documents, Folders etc.
- I get messages about having to recover the registry using an alternate copy or log intermittently when starting my computer.
- Get various and alternating errors on startup. Example: kernel32.dll an entry point cannot be found, errors related to the .net framework.
- The "flag" key sometimes does not work (i.e the start menu does not open when you press it) for a session (It might work upon restart and last until I shut the computer down again or it might not).

I was considering formatting my Windows' partition and reinstalling Windows as I have a partition just for Windows and Programs (Just need to backup my Steam games I would rather not have to download 50GB of games again). Is there a easier way of fixing it without using system restore (Waste of time that it, last time I used it, it ended up causing more problems than it fixed).

Thanks,

Tom

Reformatting is your best bet. I'd suggest [if even possible] to save some important files... then reformat. But seeing that you can't even open My Computer... I'd run Memtest86 too.

Running CCleaner now and its come up with Missing Shared DLLs for the .net framework and HP software (Thats what was causing some of the errors on startup). Going to reboot and see what happens (Fingers crossed!).

Having trouble backing up some of my stuff though as the system is prone to crashing. Everything locks up and the mouse gets stuck in the top left hand corner and after a few seconds the screen goes black (Or in the last case, grey).

Okay, good news. No more error spamfest on start up, it has fixed the errors related to the .net framework and the HP software. However, my computer etc. still does not work.

Thanks for the help :)

Try using the repair option w/ the Windows installation CD (if you have one). This will not format your disk. It deletes and reinstalls important operating system files.

Click here for instructions. Read the first and second page.

In other words, reformat. Like I said before

:p

Reformatting, will set your computer back to when you bought it, but considerably faster... and no more popups/viruses/ad/spywares/errors.

Repair and reformat are different operations. ;)

Actually, using a HP recovery disk is the only way to restore the computer back to factory condition.

Its a custom built system. The errors I was referring to that were created by HP were the software for my HP printer. Ill dig out my XP disk and try to repair it.

The disk will only fix problems related to XP, not with printer drivers. I'd suggest uninstalling that and reinstalling the HP driver...

I know, but I was only mentioning this as it started along with all the other problems. That problem is fixed now anyway, just got to fix the issue with My Computer, My Documents, Folders, etc.

Try the repair method. I think that might work, and it will not hurt any docs, etc.

Yay! The repair worked. Seems to have fixed my problems; however its broken a few applications. Nothing a reinstall can't fix though.
