New Custom Computer Building *Top PC*

So xeon is a cpu? if so, you can have more then 1 cpu? cause there's xeons and dual xeons right? or is it just that dual xeon is still 1 cpu just twice as much?

Does that mean xeon is the best right now? and even better then the 45 that will come out? What's xeon for anyways?

So currently #1 video card(graphic) is geforce 8800gtx?

Xeon are specifically made for servers, they are more expensive... Very...

They basically put 2 CPU's in one to make a dual core, and 4 in one to make a Quad...

No, the 8800Ultra for now. Just a overclocked GTX with a better cooler...

Servers process alotta information, needing a good CPU, Xeon's were designed for that... But specificially for that, not for gaming and such...

What is a server? And when you ment by overkill did you mean it wouldn't be necessary because it does a lot but something that I'm not aiming for or because it would be too much for what I need?

Got a few more questions,

What's a penryn? a cpu from intel?

whats the difference between GT and GTX for video cards? Which is better?

How many memory can I get? and how many memory chip slots are there?

How many video cards can I get? (slots)

Does blu-ray support HD? As in it does what HD does plus more?

What's the best dvd drive? And is a dvd drive necessary? is it the same thing as the cd drive?

Lastly what's low latency ddr3? is low latency a brand?

Thank you

Servers are basic computers used to provide data to other computers. For example a website is hosted on a server which sends your personal computer information when you visit it.

Penryn is one of the 45nm cpus from intel that come out soon.

GT and GTX are both model names used by nVidia. GTX is better. In terms of the 8800, there's a very small difference and the 8800gtx isn't worth the extra cost.

Most motherboards have four memory slots, I guess some have eight. You can probably get up to 32GB, but that would be major overkill. Four GB is the most you would want, 2GB of good memory is probably enough. I'd say get DDR2-800 now, then upgrade when you need it.

You can get up to four I believe with ATI's crossfire. Again, overkill. It's usually best to get one good one. SLI is two nVidia cards. Crossfire and SLI are rival technology.

Blu-Ray is just an optical disk (like a dvd) with lots of storage space. Blu-Ray movies are HD. But you can also store other files on them.

DVD drives are necessary, but I believe they're all the same, so just get a cheapish one by a known brand.

Low-latency means quick to respond.

How much memory is 1 gb (gigabyte)? is ddr3 the best memory (ram) and how much memory should I get? 2g?

So if i get a blu-ray disc tech then i don't need a dvd drive?

What's the best brand for low latency ddr2?

So basically it's ultra > gtx > gt for video cards? if so, then the best is GeForce 8800 ultra? Is that all I need for top performance of graphic?

What's the best hsf?

What's the best Hard Drive?

Thank You.

1GB is 1 billion bytes worth of data I believe.... is that what you were asking? DDR3 is probably not the best right now due to high latencies. But it will be. Get two gigabytes ddr2-800 since it is cheap but still good, then upgrade once ddr3 is worthwhile.

Yes, a blu-ray drive is the next generation dvd drive, so it would take the place of a dvd drive. You really don't need it though.

OCZ, Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, maybe Patriot or G-Skill.

Yes, Ultra is the best. It's not really worth it though. It's about six hundred dollars compared to 250 or less for a GT. And the performance difference is not too much. Perhaps 15%.

Don't know about best HSF, probably a Zalman. Ask in the CPU section. However, a cpu comes with a HSF that works well. You don't need to buy one unless you are overclocking.

Fastest hard drive would be a western digital raptor. Or a raid array, which is basically two hard drives seen as one. The computer writes to both at once to double the write speed.

Is evga and xfx and msi and pny all with nvidia? Cause there graphic cards are all named geforce. what's the difference?

Which is the best x38 motherboard? is it the
ASUSASUS MAXIMUS EXTREME LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard?

Also, is x38 better then Ati Cross Fire?

I can use x38 for future cpus such as the 45nm right?

Which is the better sound card asus zonar or auzentechs or creative x-fi?

and is the best low latency ddr2 memory?

How much mb is 1 gb?

Thank You

No, nVidia manufacturers the "chip", and they brand put their own cooler and rest of the GFX and stuff...

Yes, I'd go with Gigabyte though...

x38 and ATI Crossfire are both ABSOLTELY 2 different things, their not even related to each other... One's a chipest, one's a GFX term...

X-Fi

Like I said, go with the X38, ignore crossfire... You wont ever need that...

3-4-5 are the lowest latencies...

Xeons are not just for servers, but are the standard intel processor in server machines. They are the high end processor from intel.

Crossfire and SLI = a waste of money. If you are going to game, just buy one high end gaming card and be done with it. Especially if you plan on upgrading gaming cards every year.

What are you going to do with this rig besides gaming? I don't think you would benefit a ton from having a quad core over a dual core for gaming. I am not sure if video games even utilize the other cores. So, a Core 2 Duo chip may be the best bang for the buck.

intelfanboy88-

Go troll somewhere else. Everyone has to start somewhere I am guarantee you don't know everything.

Why not just sticking with suggesting a system which is a good mid range one that will fullfil all his needs... Then you can help him learn about why that system is better and how to build it instead of explaining all over the place.

Blue ray and HD are 2 competing rival formats. Blue ray will not play on a HD player and visa versa. I have heard that some companys are going to be coming out with a dual player that will play both. And there are a couple of burners coming out in the next couple of months that will burn one or the other formats, and play back the other format, but they are EXPENSIVE! $1200 or so.

Which is better ga-x38t or ga-x38? and how is gigabyte better then asus?

There both brands for intel manufactures right?

I also herd Asus was the best mtoher boards. So which do you think I should get?

Also what's the best hsf? After those 2 questions, I will post up my build that I made from my research.

The x38t uses DDR3 ram and the x38 uses DDR2.

So the X38 will be cheaper to use right now, but the X38t will be a bit more future proof. Otherwise they are about the same.

Gigabyte boards tend to be a bit more user friendly. They tend to be more forgiving about what brand of Ram you use. Asus tends to be more picky about the Ram, but Asus usually has more overclocking features.

However there both brand names using intel manufactures right?

Can a x38t use ddr2 aswell? or just ddr3?

What's a good hsf?

Thank you everyone, been very helpful.

tlarkin,

I didn't say I did, but really, go buy a book about this stuff if you really are interested. His questions aren't informed ones, and it would be better for his learning process to explore on his own and THEN ask questions. At this rate this post will be up here for weeks as people attempt to explain the difference between blu ray and a hard drive...

For one I'll stick with him till he finishes. That's what a forum's for. Getting hands on experience...

If you have any questions, keep on posting. If no one else answers, I'll try my hardest to help.

Ahaha your totally right intelfanboy88. If I was really that interested I should buy a book. However I'm not really that interested as much as you think I am. I'm trying to get a nice comp for gaming, and the majority of people on this planet don't read books on computers to buy a computer. Do you research/read every little thing you buy or do? Yeah I didn't think so. There's nothing wrong in asking for peoples opinions. Maybe I don't want to read books, so you goin to do something about it?

Anyways my 2 questions were whats the best hsf? and can you use ddr2 on x38t?

I appriciate it oscar

No you can't. It is limited to DDR3. And thats per the manufactures website.

X38t

X38

DDR3 DIMMs have 240 pins, the same number as DDR2, and are the same size, but are electrically incompatible and have a different key notch location
