    Time to Overclock!

The fsb may be labeled as base clock or something similar. I'd say your temps are fine. It's common for an unlocked chip to run hotter than normal ones do, and if you have bad airflow it doesn't help things. High ambient temps won't help either, and you're right, the TIM does need to settle in...

    Better Choice?

Yeah...the stock power supply unit won't hold a very good graphics card. The mobo is fine though. With PCIe, as long as it fits in the slot, it'll work.

finished 1st PC-build yesterday, but won't turn on

If the on/off switch on the back in the "on" position? Also, if you have a good PSU it won't have a red voltage selector on the back, but just in case it does have one, make sure it's set at 115V.

Putting new desktop together, need plug advice

Actually, he has a point. I wasn't looking at that adapter correctly...those ends are all female. It wouldn't be any different than using the Molex straight into the PSU. The point of that adapter is to power several fans from one Molex. You'd think the fans would have 3-pin motherboard header...

Dude, you can't beat the old Thinkpads. They're friggin indestructible.

got a really really really slow computer on my hands

Well I never said it was fast...the pages definitely download faster than the computer can render them. But, it's not so excruciatingly slow that it becomes unusable...just a minor annoyance.

Putting new desktop together, need plug advice

If you plug the fans into the PSU, they'll be running 100% all the time while the system is on. If you use one of those adapters that came with the case, you can plug the fan into a header on the motherboard, allowing the mobo to control the fan's speed. (and in the process control how loud it is)

    Which PSU?

^ That's for the whole system, not the GPU by itself. With nothing overclocked, I'd agree with him.

    i5-661

^ Actually, in a lot of places, the 760 is cheaper. Same for the 750. But yeah...grabbing a true quad core is definitely worth it. The 661 is only so expensive because it has a graphics chip integrated into it...something you'll never use.

Anyone with time help with my first build

^ The S12II Bronze units are the best ones in the price range. Keep the one in the first post. :good: edit- Look here: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=185 Getting a 9.7 from Jonnyguru is not an easy thing to do. They're like the Simon Cowell of power supply...

    Which PSU?

^ Whoa there, your math is off by a bit. It's good to allow some head room for overclocking and whatnot, so we'll call the i5 110 watts. The GTX 570 has a tdp, or maximum power usage, of 219W, but you could probably hit 260 with a particularly beastly overclock. So that's 370W for those...

Second time I've had a problem with G.Skill Memory

Oh...that's definitely not the problem then. :o Your motherboard lets you adjust the latencies individually? That would definitely be a problem though, yeah. Does it work ok with the slower sticks removed? Also, as far as I know, all DDR3 (1333 and up) defaults to 9-9-9 @ 1333...

Is my tower and PSU upgradable?

About the connectors, you mean? An industry-standard usb header, coming from the front USB ports and connecting to the motherboard, looks like this: But a lot of whit box companies, for some reason, use a different connector designed by them. They often do the same thing with the connectors...

got a really really really slow computer on my hands

Browsing, facebook, itunes, OLD games, etc... As long as you're not trying to watch flash videos or something, most P3 machines can still handle everyday tasks reasonably well for being 10-12 years old.

    Second build

Not at all? Fail :( Still, go for an i5 7xx over a 6xx. The 6xx ones are dual core with hyperthreading, while the 7xx ones are quad core, and cheaper since they have no integrated graphics. You basically drop a useless feature and add a ton of performance. You could also consider AMD for now...

USB 3.0 is only useful if the connected device also has USB 3.0, and you're using a USB 3.0 cable. Otherwise, there's no gain.

Is my tower and PSU upgradable?

    1. If it's a white box computer, it probably uses non-standard connections inside. Won't have very good airflow either. You're also confined to mATX. Getting a new case would be worth it if you're building a new machine. 2. It may be newly bought, but I can tell from the rail ratings that the...
