The compression size depends on what you are compressing. For example, the compressing size is better if you compress .txt than .exe files.

I think it's safe to you to uncheck thoes programs that you know and you dont use at the startup of the computer. Anyway, MSConfig don't put essential software there so it's hard you can get big problems if you uncheck something

Well i recommend you to use Deflagger, it's the best one in my opinion. And you must defrag every 3 months. (Is what my Microsft book says). But if you install and unistall a lot of thinks in days you must do it imediatly after that.
