Vista or XP is fine. For your nan, XP is probably better, as it's closer to what she's used to. Older people often find Vista very frustrating and intimidating. It often results in them not desiring to use their computers.

My nan has vista on her laptop and she likes it.

Yes - my school has HP and we do CS3 work and office on it and they work well. We used to have dell (still have some) and they did mainly office - no editting. So yeah AMD are good.
