there is NO WAY you'll spend that much. $3000 at ABSOLUTE MAX. what kind of gaming are you looking to do? do you have any preferences (nvidia vs. ati or intel vs. amd)?

Case: Corsair Obsidian Black $300 shipped
CPU: i7-960 $570
Memory: 12 GB 2x 3x2GB Corsair $460
PSU: 1000w Corsair $226 shipped/rebate
Optical Drive: Pioneer Blu-Ray Burner $200
SSD: 128 GB Corsair $325
Raid/Storage: 2x WD Cav Black 1TB 7200 $180
GPU: XFX 5970 $730 shipped
OS: Windows 7 $90 (combo)
MoBo: ASUS P6T7 WS Supercomputer "Ultimate Gamer"$410 shipped
Water Cooling System: Don't really know what this is, but it's expensive$270 shipped
Monitor: Asus 24"x3$660
Speakers: Logitech System$365 shipped

that would get to $4376, leaving $400 for a pretty damn nice keyboard and mouse.

I'm sure this isn't anywhere near the best use of the cash... just fealt like taking a look at what's available with that budget. Good luck.

Thinking of buying 2 things for sure,

CPU: Intel 980x Extreme Edition
GPU: Radeon HD 5970 Black Edition

and I don't know about the rest, I need someone to tell me what to buy.

That's insane dude, if you really have that budget then get two 5970's; you'll have 4GB of GDDR5 Graphics memory. You could build a computer that will run crysis without a hitch for $1000.

Then help me by stating what motherboard that can load 2 pce-i video cards and etc.

Asus Rampage III Extreme Intel X58 Crossfire SLI DDR3 ATX USB 3.0 Motherboard Socket 1366
-
a beast of a mobo, will support i7-980X, loads of fast DDR3, and Crossfire/SLi

I tried building a system without going too ridiculous, but with the budget, it is impossible. I have done one, and even have $665 left over (could knock off the fans/heatsink and spend it on water cooling, but I'm not listing a water cooling setup, I know not very much about it):

$6460 total

Half that budget would be enough for a full system able to play any game out now and out for the next few years,. Your budget is, and this isn't an understatement, a ridiculous price for a computer.

A hex core CPU is a waste, more than 6GB RAM is a waste, a single 5970 would be complete overkill, you don't need 3 monitors and you don't need a sound card. that was filling out the budget because it is what you asked, but even if I had the money, I wouldn't build this

Dude I don't want to waste all my money on anything I see, I just want to buy the best specs on each hardware so I can know that it will survive with me within the next 12 years or more. Liked the case btw.

Agreed, if I had that sort of money I'd spend maybe 1000 on a nice quad-core rig, pocket the rest, or buy a car or something. Or maybe treat the Missus
;)

well that won't happen. You won't get a system that will last that long.

You would be better off opening a high interest account and stick all but 2k in there. With that 2k, build your computer and use that money in the bank for computer budget, to upgrade when it is needed, which will only be, if you want to keep the system up at the top, a few hundred $ a year.

To give you an idea, the 8800gtx and gts were released just under 4 years ago (November 06). At the time, they could play any game you like at full settings, and were, to a point, overkill, much in the same way that a 5970 is now. just 4 years on, 1 third of the life time that you want your system to last, 2 of those cards in SLI will handles any game still, but settings are slipping to medium rather than all high at comfortable frame rates. Give it another year or 2, and you will only be able to play on low with a single card and low-medium on dual cards. Another year or so down the line, they will be obselete.

5 years ago, the 7800gt was released, which can still play most games out now, but only on low settings.

It is impossible to ever future proof a computer because technology always moves so fast. If you are willing to take my advice and put the majority of the money away and use it to upgrade over time to keep your computer up to date, I will build a more sensible system for you. Remember as well that say you got a 5970 now, but 2 years later wanted to upgrade. You would be able to sell your 5970 for still a decent price (check out the 3870x2 and 4870x2 on ebay now to see an example of prices of used, dual chip ATi cards ;)), so it wouldn't be the same price again really, it would be a few hundred dollars less. So you pay $700 for a video card now, with the sale of it later down the line, it may be the new card only costs an additional $450 to get the latest and greatest again (assuming prices for top technology remains the same in that time)

:good: @ Aastii - You would not believe the amount of times I nodded my head in that little speech ^^^. Another example I often use is the socket 478 pentium Extreme edition. $1000 at launch, something like 9/10 years ago. It will be beaten in benchmarks now by a cheap Athlon X2 :P (~$50)

Okay, just had to respond to this. Twelve years or more? It may not be likely, but it is certainly a possibility that personal computers as we know them today may be something else entirely. As in, the computer you build now may not even be "compatible" with what is out then.

Now if you take it from the angle you're suggesting, we can assume that the core technology will remain the same but speeds and power will simply keep climbing (and I will also assume port types, connections, all the components still have the same interfaces, even though they won't). Given this, I'd still say the absolute monster system you build today will be able to be used for little more than the equivalent of "checking email" 12 years from now. In other words, it will be a POS. Compare PCs from 12 years ago (1998) with PCs of today, then assume that the rate of growth will be considerably greater from 2010-2022. Throw in all the new technological inventions and advancements quite aside from simple speed and power increases, and it's very safe to say the most incredible PC you could build today will be junk in 12 years, if it will even run any of the standard stuff then.

You could still play Crysis crazy-good though. :)

XD woah guys...I mean't as an example of just surviving XD I know it won't last for 12 years...its simply a blind example my brain come up with... and I know that I will upgrade some of the hardware in the future..

So anyway, for the ram should I go with Dominator 24GB 1600MHz or CORSAIR DOMINATOR 12GB as Aastii stated? NVM I chosed 24gb

Is it necessary to buy a sound card? I thought motherboard has already built-in sound hardware or am I mistaken?

12, but only because it is cheaper. Like I said, any more than 6 would be overkill, hell, even 6 is overkill. I had had 8GB in my system, currently and usually have 4, and saw no noticable difference at all.

No, it isn't necessary to buy a sound card, but in the same way that it isn't necessary to get a 5970 over a 5850 or 5870, 24GB of memory, or a hex core CPU, why not? It will take a very little amount of load off the CPU, and audiophiles claim that it sounds better, but that is another claim I have yet to experience first hand because from using systems with sound cards in, the quality is no better than the onboard from my motherboard or any other motherboard I have used within the last 5 years.

you would still be better off loading out about $2-2.5k and saving the rest though, you won't see any better performance in games with the setup you ask for over a quad core system with a 5850, 5870 or GTX460 and 4GB of memory

OK for my drives,
Solid State Drive: OCZ Vertex 2 SATA II 2.5 (240GB)
Hard Drive Disk: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ (1TB)

thanks to Aastii, Now what am I missing?

So what should I pick for Blu-ray and DVD Writer/reader? I need someone to guide me on this cause I don't know what to choose.

Power supply
Cooling
Case (have you decided on the Lian Li?)

For optical drives, it really doesn't matter, just make sure you get SATA rather than PATA/IDE
