It would be about the same price. However, you could go cheaper with lower quality parts. But only about $30 or so.

And you need a OS, but for basic things that you mentioned (assuming you are not using netflix), you could use Ubuntu and save $100 for the OS.

how much does this all total? I think i'll probably get Windows 7.

That is about as cheap as you will get a supply that can be trusted. If you get a cheaper brand, then you might as well buy an OEM computer as the risk of failure is the same.

If i'm going to be using the computer for documents for school, streamed videos such as 1080p youtube, email, and music, what kind of Windows 7 should i buy?

Home Premium, assuming your primary language is english.

Personally I can't see putting out $100 for windows for just basic use like that.

I'm not familiar with this kind of stuff, so basically you're saying it's possible to use a PC pretty well without Windows?

There are some things you won't be able to do. You won't be able to game (hardware), and you won't be able to use netflix streaming (company refuses to use anything but windows).

But yes, you can use linux and do just about everything windows can, minus be venerable to maleware and viruses, and paying $100 for using it.
