Have I fried my CPU???? :/ [solved]

Hi,

I have a i7 2600k water cooled. I was working today when I got an alert warning me that the CPU was runing at 79C! I shut down immediatley and let it cool down. I suspected the water pump had conked out as the RAD and pipes were cold, I powered back up for a few seconds to check. As suspected the pump had gone. The barbs of the water block were blisteringly hot, I mean skin burning temps. There was no smoke and when I put my nose over it I couldn't smell anything burnt.

I'm worried sick I've cooked my beloved i7. I'm not in a position to buy another one right now. I've never had this happen before so I'm looking for the opinions of the techs round here.:(

Well I can't tell as I darn't turn it on. I've stripped out the pump and emptied the system but the last time I looked at the screen I saw the windows splash screen. I wanted to know what is the signs it's cooked smoke? sparks? smell? or does it just not do anything?

Just put a new cooler on it. Boot up and see if it works. As far as what happens, all of the above can, depends.

It's rare that CPU's fry these days. They'll normally power off first. 79 degrees wouldn't fry it.

Ok so i got the new pump, installed it, refilled the system and all is good.......but, when i powered up, in doesn't boot to BIOS, the screen stays black and the DRAM LED light stays on. On researching this it seems to be asscociated with the RAM. Confused and worried. All Ive tried so far is removing the MOBO battery to reset the BIOS. That didn't work. I'll try and use the MEM OK button tomorrow, apparently it opens up a sort of safe mode bios to help diagnose the problem.
Can the DRAM LED light up because of a CPU problem. Would this light if it's toast? There is a CPU LED too but this doesn't light, although it flashed once when I pressed the Mem ok button (before i knew what it was for) I've taken out my GPU to acces the MOBO battery so will try the MEM OK thing tomorrow.

Take the CPU out and check you haven't got any bent socket pins - replace thermal paste and ensure you do not overtightened the cooler assembly (this can cause this issue). Ensure you have the latest BIOS too. Remove and replace ONE (1) stick of the RAM ensuring it is seated properly in the blue slots.

Try to post.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. But did you read my previous posts? What you described sounds like a standard process for a new build. My PC has been working fine for two years. There's no need to remove the CPU for bent pins. There was no problem until my CPU over heated the other day due to a faulty pump. Unless I'm not understanding someething.

I think the next step would be to take it out anyway and see if it's visually burnt.

No? I've never removed it. there was no need. It was just a faulty water pump that needed replacing. I've now replaced it and my hydro system is back to full working order, except that it now doesn't boot, and the DRAM LED stays on.

I've not given up, but I'm mentally preparing for the worst, and a huge dent in my wallet.

Sure you have everything plugged back up right. Cooler fans/CPU pump? Try just booting with one stick of memory at a time.

Up and running boys! Very relieved. All looks good, temps look good. All 4 cores idling at 31C.

Will test underload with Titanfall I think, make sure she's onform.

The MemOk! feature on my MOBO fixed it. It's like a hardware BIOS safe mode

Thanks!

Well I spoke too soon. Whilst my CPU seems fine the trauma of it has spazzed out my MOBO. I can only run 8GB of RAM if try to run all 16GB that I have it won't boot.

I installed a chipset driver in order to flash the BIOS but now it hangs at the splash screen aahhhhh.

Trying to get into safe mode but it isn't letting me.

You running 2 or 4 sticks of memory? Make sure the speed/timing and voltage is set right for the memory. Sometimes if your running 4 sticks, the memory controller might need alittle voltage bump.

Ok so I got it running again, I got into windows and uninstalled what was causing the problem.

So I'm still left with the problem of the RAM. I'm running 4 4GB sticks but only the 2 primary ones work. The thing is when I built my PC originally everything worked out of the box first time. So how do I know if there's an undervolt?
