So just click the drive and hit delete, why can't you grasp these simple concepts?

If he does that then he'll format the drive and lose his Linux install.

@Grantapus Boot into a live version of Linux (preferably Parted Magic) and use GParted to shrink your disk. Then when you go to install Windows you'll have space to install it on.

Thats obivious.

You still can't activate it without a valid key. You'll need to reinstall 8.1 on that machine and then upgrade it to 10.
No no no, i installed it and now im on it! when i go to about pc, it says windows is activated! than it says "your product key is (it has a big long string of letters)"

so, looks like... i was right, so far.

He said he wanted to wipe everything..
I do want to wipe every thing! plus, its to late now even if i did not want to wipe it. but i did what the guy said, and it worked ;)

Well in that case, have at it and wipe away!
*SPONGE ON HARD DRIVE* *WIPE WIPE WIPE*!!

Everyone is snappy today, I like it!
Me too..!

The only way it would say activated is if you upgraded an existing copy of Windows 7 or 8 or possibly signed in using a Microsoft account that was used to activate a previous windows 10 install which activated this one. A fresh install of 10 would need a key to activate. If you had any residual files left from windows 8, it may have activated 10. You can't just install 10 on an blank hard drive and have it activated, it won't happen. The OS itself isn't free as a fresh install, only previous installs of 7 or 8 will get the free OS. You can use an existing windows 7 or 8 key to activate 10 as well.

Sorry, but no.

Well, i will see what happens! but this computer DID have windows 8.1 on it.... but just in case, i do have another windows 8 computer with a product key...

I don't know if you ever fixed your problem but did you ever just consider backing up what files you want to keep and deleting Linux off of your computer. Then you could install your Windows and after that partition your HD so that you have enough room to install Linux back onto your computer. If you are having trouble uninstalling Linux you can always use DBAN to wipe the whole HD. Hopefully that helps a little if you are still having trouble.

Please read the entire thread. He wiped his disk and installed just windows.

It's simple. Follow John's instructions. I just installed WIN 10 yesterday and today on two of my three computers by upgrading, one from WIN 7, and one from WIN 8.1. I downloaded WIN 10 from Microsoft.com to a DVD and upgraded the two computers. The second one I had to use an activation key, which they provided me with over the phone.

There is no reason to be rude, I will help you if you want to be decent. Understand what you are asking to do is not a simple task and some of our forum users may not be able to help. It is easy to dual boot with Windows installed and then installing Linux secondly but not the other way around.

So if your next post can be decent I will gladly post the instruction you need.

If you can install Linux and understand it then just use common sense. Delete the partitions.

If you have not upgraded from another Windows OS to 10 before, or have no legit licence key tied to the machine (if you have managed to activate the OS...not just trial it), then you should stand in a corner and think about the bad things you have done :p. In all seriousness, lets try to all behave civilised rather than making childish remarks.

A quick google on howto install Windows 10 will help you out. IIRC this forum has a guide for it too :). DMGrier looks like he/she (delete as appropriate) will help you through it if not. Let us know how you get on.

How much was this activation key? If you upgraded both windows 7 and 8.1 then it upgrades with no activation key required.
The activation key did not cost any money. First I uploaded the WIN 10 from the disc I made from a WIN 7 system. Then I used the disc a second time to upload WIN 10 to a WIN 8.1 machine. The second system required an activation key. This did not cost me any money.
