HP a1550 y

Its the motherboards right. The leucite motherboard supports 800 series CPUS and the ASUS probably supports the whatever else.

OK so heres my plan I will order the 840 D and 2x1 GB ram sticks and see what that does.

Any suggestions on where to get cheap parts. I have found processors on Ebay for 5.00 but they are as is and no returns so if they are junk I guess that I am out 5.00

Thanks for your help.

Ebay or craiglist perhaps. There won't be store selling that type of processor as its outdated and no longer made. Yes, its an Asus motherboard but its not supported by Asus as its an OEM motherboard made strictly for HP computers. HP will have the information you need. But I would stick with the 840 unless you know for sure the 915 will work. The 840 is faster then the 915 anyway.

OK Thanks I am shopping now and have ads out.

Why is the 840 faster then than the 915?

Thanks
Why do you really want to buy a new CPU that is only 140MHz faster? You won't notice the difference. You're better off just reinstalling Windows.

Because I want to pull out the CPU and replace it. The satisfaction of doing it is a big motivator. Also I want to see what happens.

i wouldnt even try to run 8 on that hardware.win7 is a really good os and for your needs there is no need to upgrade.

I wouldn't go higher than a GTX750 with that CPU, unless you replace the PSU (assuming its original).

power supply unit. Open your computer and look at the sticker on the box the power cable plugs into and copy down the model number and post it in this thread (im interested in more than wattage). It will look a bit like this:

Do I need a PCI E type card and what DDR should my new card run?

Also whats the difference between 333 Mhz and 667 Mhz RAM sticks?

Doesnt this one run DDR2? Can I run a ddr3 card?
