It's 5.1, I dont have stands behind me so I put them on the corner of my desk, it works well still for surround sound.

I have mine installed in the joists of the floor above, since my room is unfinished.

I had mine on the ceiling, but that was before I had my X-Fi so I couldnt hear anything out of the rear speakers since they were so far away. But now I can adjust the volume for each speaker, so I may try that again.
