Crap, I was just trying to install it again and a blue screen came up that said "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer" at the top. That cannot be good!
With the installation options you not only need to see new primary created but can see it formatted as well. Personally I prefer a Linux drive tool that detects as well as more accurately utilizes drive space when going to work with existing partitions as well as creating new ones.
The installers for both XP and Vista have no problems detecting and installing on those. For XP the installer would then format the primary as an automatic process since the older version lacked the format option now seen with Vista. But that's the first step following the creation of the new primary you need to see done there.
