Of course it´s a marketing technique. If there is no alternative why the hell would you lower your prices right?

AMD does/did the same shenanigans with the original FX.

They're both for-profit companies that are publicly traded, the only incentive to lower pricing is to gain market share over an equivalent competitor product. If there are no equivalent competitor products, prepare your anus/wallet.
