Printer not consistently communicating with computer.

I have Windows 10 and ever since Microsoft had me reinstall it to try to resolve something else (and failed) I haven't been able to communicate with my printer (connected by cord) unless the printer is on prior to the computer. How can I fix this so computer can be on first and it still work?

My guess is that you let windows install its own driver for the printer which you shouldn't do. You need to download the software from the printer manufacturer and install it that way.

And if the printer is wireless, I highly recommend setting it up that way instead of using the usb cable. What printer do you have? I'll give you a link to download the correct software.

Why would wireless be better than physical connection? That seems like more room for errors. I didn't choose any drivers. It was a reinstall of OS without deleting any other apps or data. I use a Canon MG6620

Download and run this software to install the printer.

Before running it though, go into programs and features and uninstall all software related to that printer.

1. Remove usb cable from printer before running the install software. Only connect usb cable when it requests it.

Wireless is so much easier, no cable to deal with, easier to use if you have multiple devices to print from.

In the end, its your choice though. I haven't used a usb cable in probably over 10 years or more.

What I linked you to is the full version driver software for your printer from canon's website, its a direct download link so when clicking it, it automatically start the download process.

Also I view forum from phone so typing it all would be difficult.
So this is where you would do it on a pc or laptop.

Also, if you use your phone, and you set up your printer wirelessly then you can print from your phone directly to the printer. Comes in handy.

Here is the website you would want to go to
