Processes (how many is too many)

Now my computer is awfully slow starting up. (HP XW4100 2.8Ghz 1GB RAM WIN XP PRO SP2)

I run spy/adware software to keep it clean but I have:

65 Running processes
2699 Process Modules

Does this seem high to you guys?

69 processes is definitely too many running. I only have 25 processes runnin right now. Go to your task manager and close the ones that you are not using.

Ctrl+Alt+Delete will bring u to that screen

I do know how to open Task Manager :) Running Panda ActiveScan now...

Its got 1.2 Terabytes to crawl through.... (4 network drives before you ask)

I have 40... is that too much? If I really try and clean the startup, i probably could get it to 35... but i dont know how you manage 25 lol! :D

that's because i only run the following programs when i use the computer:

-AOL Instant Messenger
-Mozilla Firefox
-Limewire

i havent really found anything else interesting to do on the computer

Yes...

It checks virus's - I have Norton 2005 AntiVirus and Panda has found 16 so far (scan only 50% complete).

I also use Ad-Aware SE, Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster and it has still found 9 Spyware items.

On the bright side it hasn't found and Hacking tools, Dialers, Security Risks or Suspicious files... as yet

always a good sign...

now, are all of those programs trial versions or are they keepers that you can use over and over again?

mhm... good insight. i just have this thing for downloading programs that are supposed to help my computer but i have to pay for them. i really dont wanna pay for programs like that (spyware remover). i search far and wide on various websites to find free programs. sometimes i get surprised and find free programs but they are only trial and one day i decide to go use the program and i get a notification stating that my trial is up... that really pisses me off!!

what is the name of the account u have setup on ur system?

ie: when i turn my computer on, i named my account "emachine"... so what's urs? plz tell b/c this could be crucial in helping to fix ur system

the only reason i ask this is because if you go to the task manager, you should organize the username programs together that are under your account name... then go from there and close all of the programs you're not using

why what's wrong with your eMachine? mine seems to be going at a pretty good pace... maybe i can relate to some of your problems? do tell...

i got 29 processes.....i am running msn, IE 7.0, and wmp10, also got my firewalls and security software up and running!

i reformatted my hdd because it was dell and they always overload it with crap not needed....btw I9300!

36 processes at the moment, but i could probably get down to 20 if i closed everything

F@H
Firefox
Trillian
Winamp
Atheros config
Microsoft anti spyware
AVG
Speedfan
Sound utility
ATi Control Center

AVG and Antispyware have about 6 processes alone...close all of those and i'd be in the low 20's i think.
