Switching to Intel

Overclocking is over rated. With most overclocks you only get a small increase in performance with less system stability. It also shortens the life of your components. It would take a lot to bottleneck a Q6600 processor running at stock speed. It is a great processor running at the manufacturer's recommended speed.

How is overclocking much different from buying a higher speed processor? Whats the difference between say an E8400, E8500 and E8600? They're the same chip, just binned differently for market. As far as negligible results, I can't agree. The Q6600 is a heck of a workhorse, but my two machines that run Q6600's at 3.6 GHz can't be touched by a stock CPU. Small difference? try an increase of 50%. In some tests, my overclocked sub $200 Q6600 can beat a stock core2 extreme CPU that costs more than 6 times as much! As far as stability, my Q6600 home server running at 3.6 GHz has NEVER crashed, blue screened, suffered from any overclock related stability. If you have instability, you're doing something wrong.

Please don't knock it until you've tried it. :D

As far as tasking your video, I can relate. Try running Crysis on high at a resolution of 5040 x 1050. It's enough to bring my system to its knees.

Yea... overclocking would really increase my 3dmark06 score so why would overclocking not help?

I'm with ya there, my 3dmark06 absolutely jumps when I OC, well it did before I had Q6600. The performance increase you see is when your cpu usage spikes, like logging on, starting a program, returning to desktop while gaming, etc.

As long as you keep your temps under control, OC'ing is certainly not overrated.

Would I see any frame difference in games like Crysis if I OC'd to 3.6 on th Q6600? I know CPU's rly dont play a big role in video games but every frame counts in Crysis.

Nah you would'nt see much of a difference. These days CPU's play a pretty large role, but the actual CPU usage of Crysis is good it's the 3d rendering that kills Crysis, it could be much better.

Where'd you hear that? Try running a top of the line video card with an old P4 and tell me that CPU has little to do with the overall numbers... :D

I remember a very recent post in another forum where someone traded their E8400 for a E2180 and another 3870 to crossfire. Despite going from a single GPU to a crossfire config, the difference in CPU power was enough to drop their 3DMark06 score by over 3,000 points.

What? I'm going to understand that was a typo!!

You are hereby not permitted to give any more opinions or advice.

LOL!!

Thats a pretty awesome res for a 22" samsung panel..

I don't run on one panel, I run Crysis and most games across three 22" widescreen LCD panels. Each panel runs the game at 1680x1050, time 3 monitors = 5040x1050 resolution.

(Notice my signature says FOUR 22" monitors with a Matrox TripleHead2Go DE)

..uh..huh...

..okay, thats not really accurate...but ok..

Oh really? Do you use it? How do you know? I can only assume by your comments that you think I'm either incompetent or a liar. Either way, it pisses me off.

Whoa whoa..hold on Vix..

I certainly don't think your incompetant, and I also have no reason to think your a liar...

Anyhow enjoy your setup man, I'm sure its awesome!!

Funny how your story changes after evidence is provided.

What story changed?

I never said he didnt have multiple monitors....I never called anyone a liar...I simply question the resolution he claimed...sorry I didnt read his signature prior to posting..

Why don't you mind your business and get your s*** straight ...

p.s. why dont you come talk to me when your mommy stops buying your computer stuff for you.

No biggie scooter...

I'm a big girl... I can handle it, I just tend to post my opinion if I get miffed.

Well thank you for being a mature adult!

I apologize for coming off very ignorantly...

thanks for explaining your setup--

The GTX 260 seems to have dropped in price enough to actually be cheaper then the HD4870. I see multiple benches that lean in both ways of the GPU spectrum, some showing the 260 better in some games and the hd4870 in others. The wins are never constant though so I guess it depends on how good the card is that you get. That being said, is the GTX 260 a better buy now that its below hd4870 price?

Yeh know whats annoying...and I'm sure I'm not the only one..

there are several sites with benches and tests and they are all different...

I can speak from experience that hd4870 rips crysis very very well but I don't even know which site is correct with actual comparisons.

Maybe we could start a thread with actual benchs and test from various members and then we have real-world data from people we can talk to and discuss with...?

i dunno..my 2 cents

Exactly my thoughts, every site I went to a different card was on top on the same game. What do you guys think is a better company? Visiontek or Sapphire? Visiontek's lifetime warranty comes with a price and Sapphire is $10 more BEFORE MIR.

I hate the idea of not being able to flash BIOS if its incompatible with Q6600 since I have no other computers that run on a 775 socket. Your not the only one to suggest that motherboard though, can I ask for your reasons on choosing it? Also, the HDMI port on the Super Micro I linked, what is it used for? Does it have the same purpose as the one on the PS3? I also didnt realize it wasnt compatible with DDR2 memory, theres no way I'd buy DDR3 ><.
that motherboard is amazing works execelnt on a q6600 no bios flashes and works with ddr2
