Such as Seatools Drive Diagnostic from Seagate.

I recommend backing up your data before testing it just in case it fails.

Don't do anything before you back up your data while you can.

The Click of Death sound means you are about to lose the whole lot. Don't waste a single moment until you have backed up everything. Then you'll need a new hdd. I would recommend a SSD.

Do not get an SSD. Your motherboard is not SATA.

You're right good pick up. But, an SSD where it would've been compatiable is still a good choice as even in this archaic machine the HDD is still the weakest link in terms of performance.

But in this case, yes a normal ATA HDD is the way to go.

Not to call you out, but Seatools and all other HDD diagnostics are bootable media. They are meant for the most part to be a no boot diagnostic. Download the dos version and burn it to a disk. After that put the disk in your desktop and boot from it.
