There's also one other edition not mentioned at the link there namely the Enterprise edition for corporations. You'll note right behind the Ultimate version the next down is the Home Premium edition. The chart there shows which version has what features included. Hardware protection stands as the main difference between Ultimate and the other lower priced versions.

The first line there is for the 64bit version or XP Pro OEM while the second is for Vista Home Premiun Upgrade retail. THose are two totally different versions of Windows there. Vista is the new OS with the higher price tag while newegg is holdng a higher price on the OEM for the 64bit version of XP seen as low as $50-$65 elsewhere. Im pretty sure the top one is not XP. Its the new egg link for:

And if its not Xp, what are the differences then?
 
That's an odd one there. When first going to the link apparently I was redirected to an XP page! The main differences between the 32bit version and the 64bit version of Vista or XP even would be like comparing that to the swap from the 3.1/95 16bit environment to the 98 32bit one. The eventual shift to the improved structure offered will take far longer then the 95 to 98 change since NT was already 32bit at that time. The softwares are still geared at 32bit OSs despite a degree of backward compatibity some have seen with the 64bit.
 
go for ultimate, there are some probs with vista (ie. games, programs, need drivers, patches ) but its all good :)
 
There were problems with XP when that first came as well. Dirivers and patches will take time as usual along with newer softwares that will be coming out. It;s unfortunate but the average user still becomes the "beta tester" for the finished versions? MS now claims that Vista is geared more for customer(cough cough) satisfaction.
 
meh , i seem fine with my vista ultimate, the only thing i havent found to work is my game BIA-Earned in blood game, other than that i have found all the software, drivers, and patches for everything. but some might say others wise just to stick to XP till they come out with more drivers for vista.
 
Every software and drivers i have used so far have worked for me too, i think it was just prejudgement because of the previous version's history, microsoft have done really well with Vista

Whats the difference between Windows Vista Ultimate and Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade?

Why would someone buy Vista from microsoft for $250-$300 when they can get OEM versions for $199? When you buy directly from Microsoft do you get anything extra that you dont get just buying the OEM's?

Drivers are all the same for Vista, they dont have ones just for Ultimate. The only difference between Ultimate and other versions is the amount of RAM it can support (compared to the x64 Home versions), and the software thats included.

And the Vista editions you see in stores for $250-$300 are that expensive because they are the retail versions which stores have to sell, and they include the retail packaging and more detailed instructions. What TigerDirect and Newegg sell are OEM versions, which are the same OS, just different packaging.

And if i got an OEM version, do i still get tech support and/or updates and patches?
 
Newegg and TigerDirect seel the retail versions as well there. And not everything runs on Vista. Some were just a little "better off" to see the certain limited selection of games run on Vista. But there are others that won't even install like Metal of Honor: Allied Assault failed while others like Half Life I+II as well as Eposode One and Counter Strike:Source went right on. Fear and Prey have worked well.

Some older games like Return to CastleWolfenstein and Soldier of Fortune I+II also worked out. Theose are less involved as far as sound there avoiding problems that have been with hardwares. If fact there's already a thread started on games that will or won't run on Vista seen at http://www.computerforum.com/82219-pc-games-will-wont-vista.html

What we need now is a thread for all of the desktop applications that will or won't! Despite what has been seen on compatibility lists?(Those are a joke at times!) you will find that a new version or patch of some type will needed for many like Cyberlink's PowerDVD 6+7 version still needing the next 8.0 release. You have to watch for the "Vista ready" emblem when going to buy any new softwares now even with only later plans to upgrade from XP.
 
so, is it not worth getting vista if im a heavy gamer? (i need a new OS, im buildin a new comp)

Edit: although, on that list, it seemed as if the games that worked far outweighed the ones that didn't

with one Gb of ram vista ultimate wrok fine , but i got 2 gbs now soo its really working fast , just be sur to have 1 gb or higher if ur going ot get vista ultimate, and im sure most of the software and hardware ur going ot build ur new comp with will have patches and drivers out there for you

When upgrading the last(XP/98SE/Linux) build from 1gb of performance memory to 2gb of value ram the system itself ran smoother despite a cpu on the way out. That same 2gb of memory got put to use on the current build for both versions of XP as well as Vista. Creative and NVidia were the slow ones coming out with drivers while ATI had a working set during the beta period last fall.
