im going to buy an lcd monitor soon, since ive saved up some money. should i buy a widescreen monitor or a standard monitor. ill gladly listen to opinions, but if you have any facts that you think would sway my decision please include them in your response. thanks

I have to say that windscreens are much better cuz they are more realistic when comes to watching movies and playing games. Well that's my opinion on what i have experienced

Widescreens are awesome once you spend some time configuring them. They give you a lot more desktop space, which I find real handy.

yea sure but they are overly expansive, and it takes a much better video card to power them than a normal screen, that still loooks great

With a wide screen monitor, such as a 19", would a standard 19" be physically bigger than a wide screen 19" considering the sizes of a monitor are taken diagonally across the screen?

The widescreen will be probably 2-3" wider overall then the standard 19". I'd go with whatever youf ind in your price range with the features you want. Widescreen gives advantage in gaming (more area horozontal to view), as well as playing DVD's and stuff, but 19" standard is still, well, the standard. 1280x1024 or 1440x900? Which sounds more appealing? You have to decide. Or, can you swing the money to go for a 20.1" monitor? Standard or widescreen? That gives you 1680x1050 in widescreen.

I like widescreen because I use photoshop and various other programs that are made easier to use if you have a widescreen monitor. Widescreen DVDs look better than 4:3. It's really a matter of preference.

I have a Widescreen currently and it is amazing. It is amazing for Games and DVD's but also for everything else.

YOu have to get used to it though. :P It looks really really different. Mine configured by itself.

I do prefer widescreen, even though I have a normal 19" LCD. However some games dont support widescreen resolutions.

ah, i think you just answered my question.. so a 19" wide screen will be exactly the same size (in height) as a normal 19", but with an extra few inches in width?

Here is the monitor that i am looking to buy:

Also, im currently using 1 CRT 17" and crt 15" monitor. The current highest resolution it will let me select is 1152x864. Will the highest possible resolution go up if i get the monitor specified in the link above? (i have a Gforce fx5700 gfx card)

The video card you use will do a max resolution of 2048 x 1536, which is more then enough to support a 1440 x 900 resolution.

I say go with widescreen, I just went from a standard 17" LCD to a widescreen 22" LCD (1680 x 1050) and I love it. I like high definition video, and games look so much better so it's great for me.

a 19" widescreen and a 19" standard will be different. The Standard will be taller but more narrow, while the widescreen will be shorter but wider. Do you want more square, or rectangle?

Oh yeah, in general you get what you pay for in LCD's and such. How about http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/114272 or http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/98788. Acer 19" monitors..one is standard, the other is widescreen. Still not TOP quality, but at least its a name brand. 700:1 contrast, 300-350nit brightness on them, they should do well. Response times are low on both (8 or less ms)

Too bad there isn't a Newegg UK.

thanks, that was very helpfull :)
The question is... 19" wide screen or normal, taller and narrow, or shorter and wider. lol

I dont play games on my computer, and i dont watch DVD's on it. i just use it for work, and want nice workspace with a big desktop to open multiple windows. Note: i am getting two of these for duel screens.

If you're getting dual screens, then go for 2 standard screens. The wide screens would be SO wide combined, that it would be something of an annoyance for you to look back and forth from each. If gaming and DVD's are out of your future, and you're doing productivity work then by all means - 2 standard 19" monitors is PERFECT for you.

My uncle has my dream computer. Literally. X6800, 4GB RAM, 8800GTX, X-Fi Platinum, P5NSLI, and 2 Samsung 19" standard monitors. Asked about why he goes with the two vs widescreen or single? He does alot of productivity, and its important to have two monitors of same size and same specifications to utilize. If with that computer and the priority business he deals with is good enough for twin 19's, I'm sure you are too! :) Your ownly other option would be to get one large 22-24" monitor. But, for your needs, just get the twin 19" standard monitors!

Lol if you had said that at the beginning, we would have gotten to the bottom of this a long time ago! lol

Edit: Oh yeah, make sure you buy two of the same monitors. As said, they need to have the same specifications. It's much harder on your eyes looking from a 19" monitor with 200nit brightness and 500:1 contrast then looking at a more expensive monitor with 350nit and 800:1 - the quality and image difference will wear your eyes a bit if doing productivity work.

yeah, that does sound the most reasonable option. and yeah, i will be purchasing two of the same monitor.

I will probably go with this one that you suggested:

Only thing is it is a black monitor (according to the reviews it differs from the picture) but thats just little details :)

thank you for your help.

Spend your money wisely. Spend as much as you can on the monitors. Often, your monitor ends up going through at least a couple of processors and graphics upgrades - they stand the test of time most often, and its all yoru eyes really look at - its best to spend the cash up front on a pair of good ones, then to make a mistake and live with it for 2+ years.
