HP a1550 y

The DDR on your video card doesn't matter. Download and install PC Wizard from my sig. Run it and go to FILE, SAVE AS and click Ok. Copy the text out of that file into this thread.

that will ensure we can find a compatible GPU.

You will need to replace your PSU with any gpu, this would be fine. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026

That PSU is $20 after rebate and will be useful for future builds.

Post PC Wizard report and a budget.

Ok, so no point putting more RAM in, you have the fastest that CPU and motherboard support and you only have a 32bit OS so any more is a waste. You do have Windows Pro Ultimate, so you are able to reinstall using the 64bit OS, which would allow for more RAM to be addressed, but double check the compatibility with your CPU and motherboard.

Its quite easy from here because you mobo has PCIe slot. New PSU and GPU.

GTX760 - $239 - PLUS a FREE WATCH DOGS! - any better GPU will be wasted on that system
Corsair 430W PSU - $20 - you'll need to connect one of the molex power cables to the provided splitter for the second PCIe 6 pin connector.

$260 and you will play pretty much any game on that monitor maxed out.

good thing too, the GPU and PSU can be used on any future newer system.

CPU temperature monitoring can be done in PC Wizard.

Use a spare USB thumb-drive to enable ReadyBoost.

Ok What if I got a 64 bit OS what would that change?

Also can you think of any other video cards that are ok and a little bit cheaper?

Does it matter what type of DDR the video card has? Like say I have DDR2 memory but can I still run a DDR5 video card?

1. You already own the 64 bit version. You can go here and download it, burn it to a dvd and install it.
2. GTX 750Ti would be the lowest you should go for decent gaming. You'll still need the new PSU.
3. No - it has no effect beyond speed of graphics. DDR2 is system ram, DDR3 - 5 is VRAM, different stuff.

his 5450 silence graphics card --what do you think about that?

Are you wanting to game?

That gpu is terrible and not really a step up from what you have.

750Ti is about the lowest id go if you want to game, otherwise you don't need a new card.

If you really want to spend as little money as on the 5450 on a graphics card that can actually do gaming you would have to go for something used. You could probably find something like a gtx 560 for around $70 but bare in mind this card is pretty old. It still performs decent in games though.

I know you wont approve but which is better.

ATI Radeon 256 mb x1300 pro
Sparkle computer GeForce 8500 GT 512 mb
GeForce 7900 GS 256 mb

The 7900GS is a much more powerful card, irrespective of the less VRAM.

Please note, that you will still need a new PSU, and those cards are only DX9 and wont run Windows 7 or many of the newer games.

It won't run any newer games. It's almost 10 years old. If you don't want to game, get a 5450. If you want to game, save up and get a decent card.

You need a PCI Express card - the speed of your card doesn't matter because it will only run as fast as your motherboard allows it to.

For example, if you bought a PCI Express 3.0 card and put it in a PCI Express 2.0 motherboard, it would run at PCI Express 2.0 speeds and not 3.0.
