kubuntu installation on my new compaq

I will be glad to lend you a perfectly good burned, fully bootable DVD of Ubuntu. I know that doesn't help, but we'll see. I would definitely look to see if there are any BIOS revisions for your board, I believe this installation problem is related to hardware.

and thats blinky lol

Can you post the specs on that machine? It looks like you have a hardware conflict.

Also, what comes before the mce_panic line?

Have you tried to install the 32bit version?

It looks like there is a problem with the Atheros driver used in the 64bit version. You could give this link a go as well. I'll check back with you tomorrow.

what video card and what driver, typically those come as an installer script so you will need to run the script to install them.

my laptop has a geforce 8200m. im trying to download the nvidia driver package 177, but it wont let me install from a flashdrive.

i havent configured the network connection yet

Yeah well you can copy it to your desktop and run it there. Is it a file that has the extension .sh in it? If so it is an installer script and you need to run it as a script to make sure it installs. I haven't done a manual driver install for Linux in about a year or two but my Ati card driver was an installer script.
