Torrents are legal, as is downloading a free OS using them. using torrents to download copyright protected material is what is illegal, the actual process of torrenting is perfectly legal. And for the ubuntu ISO, its only 685MB so will fit on a 700MB CD fine. I have one lying next to me lol ;)

Unless you have recorded raw footage, the video file types are normally heavily compressed anyway. With any program you would most likely get the same result as compressing Mp3s and the like, basically no compression at all. If quality isnt a huge issue, depending on what format you have...

Depending on the SSD, you may need to use ACHI. Using a default IDE controller should work I think, but you would need to check the particular SSD. :)
