    new to this please help

In short, yes, you need to buy another copy. I would buy vista for now because it is more "future-proof" then windows xp.

    Better performance with sound card?

    Yes, but 3.4ghz means nothing. 3.4ghz core2duo? 3.4ghz PII? 3.4ghz ARM7tdmi?

Why Is Vista Slower Then Xp?

No because if an active application is in use and needs that ram, vista will gladly dump the cached data.

is it ok or not ? (vista )

You will probably have to buy a recovery cd as stated above but whats the point? If you don't like vista install xp; but what would cause you to want to use xp for now and comeback to vista? Sorry that i can't really help you, i am just curious as to see your needs in a OS.

    vista stepping on my toes

Go into the Control Panel>>User Accounts. Then look for something that says "User Account Control (UAC)" and disable it. While this is not recommended it stops those annoying popups asking "Allow/Deny". Hope this helps.

    A Linux question -

I recommend gentoo. It's a very newb-friendly distro. ;P On a more serious note: I vote for ubuntu as well. Another good one is opensuse as windows vista stole most of its look from it therefore it should be an easy transition.

Better GFX less stress on the CPU?

Im not saying anything like that. I cant give you numbers since i have never done it. I am just saying that the cpu does do a lot of behind the scenes work and so having a slow cpu wouldn't allow the gfx card to perform at its peak. No matter what gfx card you have it would still perform up to a...

Better GFX less stress on the CPU?

That wouldn't work. The x server talks to your cpu, gets the data off the ram that it needs to render then back to your cpu to get "packaged" to be sent through your bus to you northbridge then to your GPU to get rendered. On top of that there are a ton of physics that needs to be processed. I...

What Web Browser Do You Use?

I use firefox but i am switching to opera. Firefox has become what it originally was implemented to prevent; a bloated browser.

    Better performance with sound card?

Maybe if you have a shitty processor. In theory yes (if the game maxes out all your cores), but in reality no. A sound card, however, gives you more features like 5.1, 7.1, etc, clearer sound, and a better sense of where the sound us suppose to be coming from.

    7600gt or 850xt

I would get the 7600gt. The x850 generates a ton of heat (thats why most models have a slot cooler attached). That and i hate ati due to lack of linux drivers.

Why Is Vista Slower Then Xp?

It's pretty funny how many features m$ stole from linux but yet some how made them worse. The aero effects was a direct rip off of compiz and beryl, yet microsoft's version uses tremedous resources compared to compiz or beryl. That and it has a lot less features then compiz and beryl. O well...

    Internet works, games don't

First thing to check is firewalls. Make sure that your games are on the allow list for any of you firewalls. If you have a dedicated firewall make sure windows firewall is off. Also, has your games ever worked online or did it decide to not want to connect one day?
