I used to play it around 10 years ago... It was on windows, and you recruit pirates and mercenaries and it was turn based, I can't remember much more other than you were facing the british (I think, cant be too sure) and when you found treasure it was marked with an X, and you had to dig for it...

Well they're fine for storage, but I don't think you'd want to be installing and running software off them. (Correct me if I'm wrong though!) I think as long as your internal hard drive is big enough for your applications then you're set.

if a 16:10 monitor doesnt have 1:1 mapping is there some way to use my graphics card control panel to implement it? Or anything?

What happens when you run a game which only supports 16:9 resolutions on a 16:10 native monitor? Does it depend on the monitor? Can you have the black bars top and bottom or will the image just be skewed? cheers!
