Will not be the hard drive since it plays Ok on his laptop screen.
Since his tv resolution is 1920×1080 his laptop setting is not, his video card is not to the task.
I have used the Ide to Sata/Sata to Ide converters with no issues at all but some are bi-derectional & others are not so that might explain why some people have trouble to get them to work.
Actually I thought the OP attempt at calculating the wattage required from PSU's was OK, gives you an idea of what size PSU you might need....

Go to the Laptop manufacturers website & locate their nearest parts/repairer dealer and order the part through them..... then you will be ok to repair it your self.
Both the HDMI and the optical cable will give the same results but if you are using an existing on board motherboard sound then the creative pci-e sound card will definitely give you more quality sound enhancements/features.

Depends on your intended purpose for sound & what quality you desire, for general use most people would not know or care of the difference between onboard to a card, generally sound cards will have enhanced features/controls compared to onboard.
I think your ducted system is ok for your case(active cooling), but in reality your hard drive positioning in the case is a bad one if they were to get that hot.

I usually mount a fan at the bottom front of the case to push air over hard drives and motherboard, good air flow usually keeps the hard drives reasonably moderate in temperature range....never had a hard drive get to hot to burn you.
Hard drives are a resilient piece of equipment to heat.
Why I made the last statement is that I came across a couple dell computers where the bios would not recognise some unless I upgraded the bios...
These days you would imagine all DVD's should be ok but then again!!!
